hope yalls is well. i need to update discord and iris’ designs/refs because the art is old, and i figured i might as well talk about draconequi (draconequuses?) in general. iris will follow at some point idk
 
Draconequi lived millions and millions of years ago, before the presence of ponies in Equestria.  
A draconequus appears to be made up of several body parts, and this can vary between different individuals - the only consistency is the presence of a dragon like/noodley body, the head of a pony, and a dragons tail. Limbs, horns, and any other sort of appendages can be a whole multitude of different animals seemingly mashed together.  
Discord has wings, and many other draconequi would - but, given their powerful levels of magic allowing them to float, they don’t really serve much function aside from showing off/attracting mates (the more, well, chaotic the appearance, the more attractive a mate was).  
They are mammals, and due to sharing many simmilarities with ponies, it is in theory possible for them to mate and produce a fertile hybrid - but as Discord would find out later on, it is incredibly difficult and dangerous.  
As a whole, their species tends to have incredibly high levels of magic - but what they use it for is a whole other thing.  
They absolutely love to reign with complete chaos, and as top of the food chain, there are very few species to challenge them. Their diet consists mainly of smaller mammals, and to say they played with their food would be an understatement.  
What led to their decline is largely unknown to historians. Draconequii can live for thousands upon thousands of years, but they all seem to disappear within a short amount of time. It’s speculated that it was a natural decline in numbers due to naturally rising and falling food sources, and they simply never recovered their numbers  
But, without draconequi around to overhunt and diminish species populations, new settlements (and eventually, kingdoms) were built - including the three pony tribues that would eventually form Equestria.  
One draconequus did manage to survive, as we know- and after thousands of years of keeping low, boy was he out for some fun.  
His magic was not just more powerful than most ponies, but different. Draconequui magic aimed for chaos and disharmony, while unicorn magic was much more orderly and effective… So not only was Equestria easy to over power, it was very easy for them to fear him, too.  
Ponies have always been superstitious, cautious of anything new. Memories of draconequi as a species had long since faded, and so suddenly seeing this weird noodley creature creating havoc, caused them to label him the spirit of chaos himself, and believe Equestria was doomed.  
Truthfully, though, Discord isn’t even that powerful a draconequus. He’s certainly stronger than most ponies, but nothing compared to his ancestors. Not only that, but the chaos he likes to cause is fairly tame in comparison, aiming more to make himself laugh than anything. If his great grandpa was watching he’d probably be disgusted at the mockery Discord is making in the name of chaos.  
That was probably why the princesses, and eventually, the mane six, were able to defeat him. He was kinda out to cause trouble for giggles n not much else. The lives of ponies around him were just kinda secondary to his entertainment.  
Discord never loses his love for jokes and causing problems, even after reformation. He swears to be good now, honest, but isn’t above inconveniencing the ponies around him in any way he can.  
He ESPECIALLY loved to annoy Twilight. Definitely the easiest of the mane six to tweak a nerve in, and actively went out of his way, just for her. They had some sort of weird, half way serious romantic relationship between them with all this tension that built up between them…. But their relationship was far from healthy, so it didn’t last long, or end peacefully.  
Discord is now living happily with Fluttershy in her Ponyville cottage. Unlike with Twilight, or well, the rest of the world, Discord only wanted to protect and look after Fluttershy. She was far from weak, and could and will defend herself: but her tenderness with him made him want to reciprocate - and she taught him how.  
Now he’s kinda just a goofy dad. Still likes to cause problems, but mostly pretty tame, jokestore level pranks.  
Loves his daughter, Iris, with all his life. He’d hoped for a little bundle of chaos for him to pass some knoweledge onto - but Iris lacked any magical ability whatsoever. He struggles not to express a little bit of disappointment in this, but he loves and supports her and her weird hippie ideas and hobbies as best he can.
