Humans can operate at peak efficiency on a meat-free diet as well, provided supplements, which often have more benefits than their natural counterparts. Animals aren’t the only ones able to refine protein.
Humans can survive on a meat-free diet, but the human body is optimized toward digesting meat and functions best on it. If changelings can eat things other than love, I imagine it’s a similar problem- able to get by, but not operating at peak efficiency.
That said it’s already been established via the previous bad end that in this story at least changelings will starve to death without love and cannot survive on anything else.
Oh yeah, there’s that.

pony food instead of love than there wouldn’t be any
reason to eat love as long as they don’t initiate
eating ponies than they would have to be exiled
or cleansed.
Parasprites. When Twilight tried to get them to stop eating their normal diet (food) it turned bad when they decided to eat non-food instead.
