Starlight has been researching magic on Earth for a long time. The people in her village believed her to be a madwoman, until discovering the magic of Equestria by accident, when the filtered magic hits some pieces of quartz and upon having contact with one of them, she acquires a powerful magic; more powerful than the Rainbooms possess. She along with some of her friends (without them having any idea) thinks to use this magic to bring Sunset and her friends to their knees; since it considers them unworthy of magic; their mission: to take their talents from them and use them for their own benefits.
