Celestia after gaining the courage, returns to a distant land to mend an old friendship. Tragically, it was to late…
This is something I wanted to return to for a long time. This is a character lore for my AU that I set up like, maybe almost a year ago. So yeah, it’s Spike’s origin story and that his father was the ancient dragon lord, Gaius. I’m going into extra details in the additional informations part of this.
Just drawing this comic thingie took like a week. Have some stuff in my personal life that slow down the progress. Nothing serious, just something that I have to give all my priorities too. Also, I wish I could have made the panels bigger, but this thing is already like 11K px in height, not much can be done.^^’’’’ Hopefully the viewing experience is not to bad. Also, ssssssh, let’s not talk about how the wall massage looks short than what the text suggest.X’D
So yeah, here are the forementioned additional infos:
This takes place many years after the original drawing.
The far end of the Dragon Lands is rather cold, as it doesn’t have many lava sources. Dethroned Dragon Lords were exiled here.
From ancient times the Gauntlet of Fire trials existed, used to pass on the Dragon Lord status when the current one has to step down. Most of the times when they had to go into their hundreds of years of hibernation. Dragons can’t have a long time without their Lord. However, this didn’t stopped dragons to take away the status by force. This is what young, foolish Gaius did and Scales did. Scales was also dethroned by force, possible by a young Torch. One dragon can by the Lord for hundreds, if not thousends of years.
Gaius cause of death is unknown. It may be because of some form of illness.
Dragon eggs can be kept ‘alive’ and hatched hundreds of years later, as long as some level of warmth is getting to them. After that warmth is gone they can last for a few months. Gaius used his body heat to warm the egg until he passed. Gaius was unable to hatch his egg, due to his flames weren’t hot enough for it.
While dragons are communal in the way they hatch and for the first few years raise their offsprings together, in ancient times if a Dragon Lord were exiled and they had an egg, they had to took it with them, even it means they can’t hatch them. The weak lord only has weak hatchlings, which dragons don’t need any of.
The massage on the wall was written in old ponish. Celestia taught it to him.
Celestia tried to hatch the egg with her magic, but it didn’t worked. It was alive, but refused to hatch. Celestia feared what if the young one imprint on her (Gaius told her about it) , so she wasn’t sure if the egg sensed it somehow. She kept the egg in “hibernation” by giving it warmth with her magic for hundreds of years, during it trying to find somepony powerful enough to hatch it. When she formed the School for Gifted Unicorns, she put the egg in as a final test. Failing to hatch it wouldn’t have consequences, as it was also used to see the power level of the young unicorn (how much their power has an effect on the egg). She was hoping this is where she finds somepony powerful. Of course, hoping there wouldn’t be imprinting, the young dragon would have been raised by somepony else, as the student are just foals. Then young Twilight came along who managed to hatch the egg, and the later named Spike imprinted on her.
Spike’s mother’s whereabouts and identity is unknown. Celestia did not know Gaius had an egg let alone a partner. (Side note: I don’t have concrete plans with Spike’s mother for now. But I have design ideas, and I can tell you Spike looks a lot more like her.)
And I think that’s all the infos I have. I feel like I definitely bent the canon way to much for this to work. At least maybe it doesn’t conflict with stuff I wrote in the past. Maybe I can do that much.X’’D

The dragon’s gender wasn’t specified in the episode either so I can’t be certain. This artist seems to depict them as male though.
that does remind me of how little information we have on Spike’s past, as well
That’s exactly why I accept this headcannon. I might as well have something of Spike’s past rather than nothing at all. I would even like it too if Sludge WAS Spike’s father, but he is still bad. It could have taught a “not all family members are good” and “real family is built on love” kind of lesson. Since none seems to be the case, that episode is just pointless.
@Wayneponeth
I am going to guess that the dragon didn’t exactly have a voice actor in its one appearance, hence why it doesn’t have a discernible gender in your description. It is a shame, as it does sound like an interesting dragon but we never got a chance to see more of it or learn more about it other than the one flashback scene. Honestly, that does remind me of how little information we have on Spike’s past, as well. All we know is that he was brought over by Celestia to Twilight so that she could raise him. We don’t know where he came from, or who his parents really were. As another user mentioned, the closest we got was Sludge, who was frankly not that great of a character (and fortunately it turned out he wasn’t actually Spike’s father, leaving us with that mystery).
@Enmity1498
The dragon in this comic of course. She/he is the dragon lord from Smolder’s story in “The Hearth’s Warming Club”. She/he offered the pink dragon Scales a home but was eventually betrayed by her. I never actually made that connection before. Gaius could potentially be real and Spike’s real parent. It makes so much sense.
>Gaius being Spike’s real parent
>Scales’ betrayal makes Gaius bitter and not trusting anyone
>Gaius’ kindness towards Scales from Smolder’s story passed down to Spike
>Being dethroned gave Gaius a terrible living condition, speeding up his/her death
>Celestia being good friend with the only kind dragon and that’s where she got Spike
>Gaius was purple too
I can’t accept this headcannon enough.
This is why I truly and utterly hated Father Knows Beast. We thought we would finally get some answers about Spike’s origins, but instead we got Sludge, the worst character the show ever farted out.
what about her hatchlings
The ancient dragon lord is male.
yes she’s a season 8 background dragon

I agree - cool, but sad :(
Edited because: Forgot to put in my reply
It is! :)
Oh, okay. I guess it is definitely a sad comic, that’s for sure. At the same time, it is a well made comic.
Wait what? No it’s an upset face since this was so sad
This is the strangest comment I have seen here. Why the frown face?

The only thing I am wondering now is who in the world is Gaius?
