That could be a reasonable hand wave, though I’m sure it was a mistake caused by the fact that ‘The Ticket Master’ is the first episode they actually made, and it shows even beyond that (Spike having no signs of his crush on Rarity, Applejack casually letting Twilight help her on the farm despite the fact that later on in the same season, before getting any character development, she refused to let anyone help her with that, etc), with this just being the icing on the cake.

Maybe Nightmare Night was created after Nightmare Moon came back?

Early instalment weirdness I guess. Especially when it comes to the earliest episodes in a series, a few minor plot holes are to be expected. I mean, remember the time all of the Mane Six, not just the unicorns, could levitate objects?
