He literally wasn’t. He got to live his life happy with Fluttershy while the trio got stoned. He wasn’t stoned, imprisoned or had anything bad happen to him after the fact himself. The worst he got was losing his magic for like, a day. Heck, even the trio willingly let him go when they could very well have killed or hurt him once they found out who he was. He was granted so much mercy that its ridiculous.

He actually kind of did. He forced them to work together, he forced them to go get the bell and he would have forced them to eventually attack Equestria only to fail. It’s also worth noting that this was the third time he helped endanger Equestria and the second time after he was given a second chance. If those three deserve an eternity in stone then he deserves that too. If he deserves yet another chance then the trio deserve it as well.

And no, in the show he was never punished for this. At worse he got scolded and lost his magic for a day.

Still he didn’t force them to do anything. Their decisions were mainly their own.

Imagine not only citing someone’s fanfic as a source, but pairing it with a take like that… By that logic I can give a criminal a gun and if they shoot someone it’s not my fault because “they’d probably would’ve gotten a gun themselves!”.

That ridiculous scenario doesn’t even outline how bad that rationale is because Discord literally broke Cozy Glow and Tirek out from Tartarus, which they simply had no means to escape and revived Sombra who would’ve remained banished in the ether.

Starswirl below me did a better job explaining how silly that is.

By pointing out that they were only ever in a position to do anything because Discord freed two of them, raised one, and collected the last one, and then forced them to work together for revenge.

Imagine forcibly abducting a murderer from prison, telling them to plan revenge on the judge who sentenced them, telling them you will kill them if they don’t go through with said revenge, pointing them in the direction of an old weapons store to get a gun for this revenge… and then being surprised somepony gets hurt.

Here’s what was said in an alternate scenario fanfic, where Spike actually does get his wings ripped off.

Spike: I don’t blame you for what happened.

Discord: But Spike I released them..

Spike: Sure but everything they did to Equestria? T-To me? They did that on their own.

Discord: I led them to the bell..

Spike: They weren’t stupid, even without the bell they would have found a way to get all that magic.

No comeuppance for freeing 2 villains from Tartarus, 1 villain from the nether and uniting them with an idle Chrysalis. Teleporting Sombra past ALL the crystal ponies’ defenses? NOPE. Hooking up three villains with a super powered weapon? NOPE. Having the Tree of Harmony (one of his few weaknesses destroyed?) NOPE! Nearly dooming the entirety of Equestria? NOPE. HE GETS TO DECIDE THE FATE! Quality writing.

My head canon is when Discord has the audacity to suggest a millennia long petrification…

Celestia replies: “No, Discord. You tried to reform these… FOUR * REVIVES SOMBRA * … AND YOU WILL SEE IT THROUGH! You will take these delinquents to your chaos realm and do so. And should they still run amok in Ponyville after, you will be responsible for their actions!”  
Discord: “B-but! BUT!!!”  
Celestia: “No buts! Reap what you sow!”  
Discord: “Fine…” * snaps a defiant group of villains away *  
AFTER THE CREDITS  

This way Discord finally gets some lasting consequences for continuing to screw with everyone. On top of that, the villains aren’t redeemed, but it’s up to the watcher to imagine if Discord could teach them friendship
