A rule of thumb with object ponies. They always like being used for their intended purpose, and they tend to have traits or benefits that their inanimate alternatives lack, but the trade-off is that they’re a living sentient creature that you need to take care of :D

Badum’s object ponies usually enjoy fulfilling the purpose the object they’re modeled after were made for, and when the object is able to be used out, the pony usually heals or regrows in between uses.
So she probably loves being used to write with, and she probably produces more ink so that she doesn’t just die.

Fair enough; I haven’t really watched the show in, like, eight years, so my memories on it aren’t the clearest.
We caught a brief glimpse of Maud a few episodes prior to her introduction in a photo on the wall of Pinkie’s room. There was a lot of speculation at the time as to who this mysterious new Pie sibling might be.
Limestone was called Blinkie, Igneous was called Clyde and Cloudy was called Sue. Since we didn’t know her family’s names, people just named them after the Pac-Man ghosts (since the orange one is Clyde in Pac-Man and Sue in Ms. Pac-Man, it just kinda worked out).
As for Maud, she didn’t really exist until her eponymous debut episode.
