They say Peyo had too much fun making this. As far as I know it’s his last original picture of the Smurfs: he knew he was very ill and would cease to be pretty soon, and decided to go with a bang, helping a good cause all the while. His final “buck you!” to the publishers who demanded more and more Smurfs (they were good enough, at least the first 10 or 15 stories, but he made some waaaay better comics in his career).
