Trying to argue that it could fit in because “We just haven’t seen all of equestria” means literally anything could fit in. That is the flimsiest of excuses, please stop trying to kid yourself and/or troll. (Its obviously working, you keep getting me to respond.)
I never claimed that the OC wasn’t self-indulgent. Hell, I even admitted in my last post that he was skirting the line of a Gary Stu just based on appearances. However, we know little of his story outside of a handful of loosely connected pictures.
Now, on to the fact of his draconic appearance: Who’s to say that there wouldn’t be a sub-species of Changelings with a more draconic appearance that feed off dragons. It would make sense that there would be Changeling hives that adapted and evolved to feed off other species.
All in all, we know very little of the world of Equestria outside of show (a bit more if you consider the main comics canon, but most people don’t), so quite a bit is still possible. It’s similar logic when you know the full scope of TES lore.
He’s welcome to enjoy it if he wants, but I’m still going to call bullshit when he tries to claim that it’s not a self-indulgent OC that doesn’t remotely fit the show.
He likes something you hate, therefore he’s a troll. Cool logic, bruh.
Because you’re seriously trying to defend a dragon-changeling who marries and has kids with twilight.
I would have to agree that this OC definitely skirts the edge of Gary-Stu, though the black and spiky-ness is something of a staple for changelings period. Either way, that kind of fantasy is…not the rarest, though probably a bit more rare than say “making a child with your waifu and living out your life happily with your family.”
And I understand that, most of my arguments here have been made in a half-lucid tired state, though I was connecting it to the picture because this thread is on this particular picture.
@Keith Mowz
Believe what you will, Chuckles. I’m just trying to have an actual discuss on the topic of OCs and replied in the same manner you did to me. If you want to believe I am a troll, then by all means, do so while an actual discussion goes on.
I can’t even.
I’m just going to presume you’re trolling hard for my own sanity.
Well, yeah, in this case I’m not sure I would call the OC a mary-sue, but he definitely looks like a self-indulgent self-insert: All black and spiky and only slightly less edgy than bismuth but still pretty damn “edgy”. Plus, dying heroically after making a child on your waifu, and then being grieved over, is the sort of fantasy that really can’t be all that rare (especially if you believe in an afterlife, I imagine, or if you’re just really miserable and fantasize about suicide).
Again, my previous point were just off the top of my head, and I didn’t even connect it to the picture.
Alright then, well, now we run into a sort of problem. Considering that the character in question was only involved in 6 pictures – 7 if you include the one with his and Twilight’s daughter. Of those 6, 2 are of him cuddling with Twilight, 1 is of him battling other Changelings and Chrysalis – the result of which is unknown but left him heavily injured – , 1 is after the one before and could posssibly be him asking for Twilight’s hoof in marriage, 1 is of his and Twilight’s marriage, and the last is the one above. He’s given very little characterization and we can only assume what the commissioners background story for the character.
That being said, I would consider being heavily injuried and killed as genuine hardships, not to mention he only seems to be marginally more competent than your average royal guard
@Keith Mowz
1.) Hmmmm, alright. I wouldn’t call much of any of his actions as ‘total badass’ considering he died.
2.) He’s a changeling with somewhat draconic properities. Not exactly commonplace in the show.
3.) Given the range of colours in the show, that’d be any colour. Black and green is definitely within the palette.
4.) Again, he’s a Changeling that was involved in a 7 picture commission. Not exactly the deepest character development.
Everything already mentioned as far as characterization goes, but additionally
It helps a lot if they encounter genuine hardship, in whatever endeavor they set upon, and the story’s conflict isn’t resolved within two paragraphs.
Second, the author could refrain from using the “genius field”, which is a way of making a character seem competent by having all the other characters suddenly becoming far less competent than they have canonically been portrayed.
Thirdly, if in a fanfiction, one character is written to be wise to the tropes of the story they are in, and/or has the ability to see through the plot-holes in the original story, it would also help if everyone else is similarly elevated mentally, instead of left to flounder like retarded fish on land, unable to do anything but marvel at the brilliance of the (typically) main character. As seen in stories like “Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality”.
Just off the top of my head.
Hmmm, that brings up a curious question I tend to bring up every once in a while: What would make an Original Character not be – in your words – “some crappy self-insert sparkledog of an OC”?
Both tombstones are the same tombstone at different shots.
Its a poorly conveyed attempt to show it in close-up.
The more relevant answer being “Some crappy self-insert sparkledog of an OC.”
The Changeling in the comic.
Above this comment. :j
English isn’t their first language, hence why on their DeviantART page, Vavacung lists an English Editor on their comics that need one.
@vavacung
By the way, I love your comic series with Paper and Celestia. The most adorable thing ever.
@vavacung
There’s nothing inherently wrong with having a heroic OC.
I also freely admit I don’t know much of anything about this OC, so I really can’t judge.
Your art is really nice btw.
