it’s good to put things in they won’t recognise, it means they’ll ask and find things out. it’s a way of teachin your audience without forcing it down their faces.

Well yeah, my little brother asked me many questions about the series when I introduced it to him. Like why the princesses have both horns and wings, so I had explain him alicorns, and what is cider, and the auction scene in Becoming Popular, etc.  
Also, kids probably aren’t familiar with most of the Everfree forest bestiary either. Things like Manticore and Cockatrice aren’t particularly common in fairy tales.
