It’s actually one of the easier RPGs, but I admit I had trouble with the cake, due to being underleveled as a kid, and I didn’t figure out the trick to defeating it. You have to blow out all it’s candles with regular attacks.
Also, helps if you have any fearless pins.

All the areas in the ending were slightly different if you pay attention. The area Toadfasky was composing in looked like a different/unseen area of Tadpole pond. Probably not the same ones you traverse.

As for the “Magikoopa” fight shown in the intro, that might’ve been a scrapped/deleted storyline from the game. Other strange things were shown, such as enemies being fought in areas they don’t appear in, and such. (Also probably changed material.)

In fact, according to an old Nintendo Power magazine that featured a preview of Mario RPG Geno was originally going to be “Pinocchio.”

And also by sheer funny coincidence, as I’m typing this the “Fortune Street” instrumental remix of “Mushroom Kingdom town” from SMRPG is playing on my Youtube playlist right now.

I know that in a later part of the game, you run into a frog who is reading a book, who revealed himself to be the tadpole that you first encounter when you go to Tadpole Pond for the first time.

Late response, but I never really got why Tadpole Pond looked completely different in the ending sequence. Or why there was that part with a Magikoopa and Terrapins in Forest Maze in the opening sequence that never actually happens in the game.

It probably wasn’t, whoever made this image probably just wanted to compare them.

@Jarkes
Really? I didn’t know they altered that. (Though, I heard they altered one of Croco’s lines sense “bugger” is a vulgar term in some countries.)

They did remove the “background flash” effects also when your car would bump into a wall in “F-Zero.” They also toned down the flashing effects in some NES games.

It’s too bad that the effect had to be altered for the Virtual Console release, probably to prevent seizures. They also did something similar with Static E! and for some reason darkened the palette of Moleville and places that shared its tileset (though not the battle backgrounds in those places, oddly enough).

I think they had to do something similar with PSI Rockin and PSI Flash in the Wii U Virtual Console release of EarthBound.

Well, you had to hurt the cake while the candles were lite. The more times you hit the cake while the cake had the candles lite, the candle would go out, but after a few times they will occasionally go back on.

Its been too long since i played Super Mario RPG, but the cake had different attacks when the candles were lite if my memory is correct.

Well, you don’t have to, I just like to be on the safe side sometimes. ;)

I hate to admit it, but SMRPG’s ending almost made me teary-eyed as a kid. It was also great to see all the characters in the game again.

oops sorry, I didn’t know I need to say spoiler

Also, yes Geno departure was like Aron from FF10 which was totally epic. Also that’s pretty cool how they had the same music composer.

@Rarewarefan
If i’m not mistakeing you had to blow out the candles before you could hurt the cake right?

Also, Pinkie would or could just eat the cake monster.
