  1. My take on it is this: since Twilight can open the portal any time she chooses, and Sunset has a way of contacting Twilight, she could return to Equestria basically any time she wanted, so if she hasn’t yet, it’s likely because she hasn’t wanted to.

Magic Duel and IDW comics says otherwise.
 
Magic Duel was only because she cheated with the Alicorn Amulet. The Comics are not 100% cannon so you can’t count on that. There are many Videos on Youtube who explain this.

While I myself do want Sunset Shimmer to turn into an alicorn, I can understand why he doesn’t want her and Starlight Glimmer to (I myself also don’t want Starlight Glimmer to).
 
  1. Sunset Shimmer has yet to decide to go back to Equestria, which makes it seem rather unlikely for her to turn into the next alicorn princess.  
  2. Quoting Crystal Neighybanya, Starlight Glimmer really is nothing more than a ponified form of the likes of Pol Pot. She’s unjustifiable, and turning her into a Sixth Ranger will be simply outrageous.

Why does (Princess) Twilight Sparkle keep having these cheap/clichéd clones/expies/retools? Justifying her as the core character, but still…

Thanks, I also like to think that the alicorn amulet doesn’t simply give you great power, it actually gives you access to your 100% potential. And only the most powerful unicorns can teleport ( Sunset and Twilight). So, if Trixie was given private tutelage by, say, Luna, she could gain access to her true magical ability over time, and maybe a class or two on humility.
 
If we’re gonna go with headcanons, then Trixie’s potential ability is because she is a long lost descendant of StarSwirl himself, and her magicians outfit is one of Starswirls ancient robes, passed down through the ages. Of course, Trixie is unaware of this until it is brought to light by Luna.
