EG: Liked it. It wasn’t great, nor was it terrible. It did feel rushed in places, a lot of subplots came and went so quickly we never got to enjoy them, and it felt forced in places. Still, it had quite a few funny scenes and some great Twilight/Spike moments. And Sunset.

RR: This movie was perfect. From start to finish, everything was given the time and love it deserved. The only problem here is, ironically, Flash was the most forced and least developed out of all three movies. Only small nitpick.

FG: A lot of great points, but it focuses mostly on human Twilight. It’s not a terrible thing. Human Twilight’s progression throughout the movies was nice to watch and I really felt for her. However, she did kind of steal Sunset’s spotlight, the Shadow Five weren’t given the love they deserved, and given the smaller scope, I was not invested in the games. It was still enjoyable, just not as much as it could have been. It needed another good 20-30 minutes.

EG: Meh. It’s wasn’t bad but it could’ve been better.
RR: Best… animated… movie… of… 2014!!!
FG: Two words: God. Awful.

I think that’s one of my favorite things about EqG: the sense that each movie is a chapter of a larger story, the ongoing saga of Sunset Shimmer and the World Without Magic. Don’t get me wrong, FiM is great, but it’s very much an episodic program. It has some small arcs here and there, but nothing that drives the narrative as consistently as Sunset Shimmer’s introduction of Equestrian magic to the human world has driven EqG thus far. I can only hope they’re able to keep it up until the ride finally ends.

This is how I’d rank them:

  1. Rainbow Rocks-The story cracks along at a sharp place, it’s full of some of my most favourite songs and characters. I never get tired of it. There’s always some new little detail I haven’t noticed everytime I watch it.
  2. Equestria Girls- Safely played but still very enjoyable.Lots you notice upon rewatching and you can tell it has been lovingly crafted.
  3. Friendship Games-Full of unused potential (Shadowbolts and Cinch’s motives) and only picks up at certain points. I was so hyped for this movie and it came as a complete disappointment.

I personally liked the third one the best, even if I feel the second one was better crafted. That makes sense, yes?

I also have an irrational amount of love for the first one, especially the soundtrack. The recurring theme of split factions becoming united together to improve things is very relevant to me.

I’d ask why Sunset’s cutie mark isn’t in the Friendships games logo and Twilight’s is instead, but Sunset’s mark isn’t on her outfit anymore, either.

I don’t think it’s as well put together as Rainbow Rocks was but it’s certainly a satisfying conclusion, mostly because of that ending.

Still a better love story than Twilight.
Even if there’s ABSOLUTELY NO LOVE STORY IN IT.
YA HEAR? NO LOVE!
