whenever i hear/see “palette swap” i have to think about older Video hardware and how swapping the palette for some sprite can create a new one without using up any memory space. like the 2 mushrooms in the original Super Mario bros for the NES. same sprite but a different palette, same with clouds and bushes, or the overground and underground versions of the ?-blocks, normal blocks, and enemies.
 
it’s quite interesting how compact games were back then
