As a Starlight fan, it would be hypocritical of me to say that Lightning Dust didn’t deserve a second chance. But she has to acknowledge that she fucked up first.

Seeing as how she almost got people killed, that’s a good thing.

The entire point of “Wonderbolts Academy” is that the Wonderbolts value loyalty and obedience over talent and ambition. Lightning Dust would never have fitted in.

The Wonderbolts are a precision flying team. Not to put too fine a point on it, but something like that essentially requires some degree of loyalty, and bare minimum the basic ability to work within the limitations a group. Otherwise, as we literally see happen in the episode, you get your teammates hurt.

That doesn’t mean the Wonderbolts don’t appreciate talent and ambition. The fact that they were eager to get Rainbow in their group (as mentioned in “Newbie Dash”) is entirely related to both of those factors. But it’s still a team activity, and someone too conceited and full of their own self importance to notice their actions almost got others, including members of their own team, killed is a poor candidate for any sort of group like that, and a liability no competent commander would allow.

So you’re right. Lightning Dust would not have fitted in. mainly because she made no effort to do so. She was an arrogant, reckless narcissist with no concern for anyone’s well being other than her own. She would have been impossible to work with in any capacity, incapable of fostering the kind of trust Wonderbolt flying requires, and likely would have endangered lives making herself look better at every opportunity. She entirely deserved to be thrown out of the academy, and in reality should probably have never even been allowed to stay in the first place.

I wouldn’t mind seeing an episode where she tries to come back into the academy, but some of the ponies she hurt and Spitfire aren’t sure of letting her back. Rainbow Dash is willing to after seeing she’s changed for the most part, the better and is willing to help her in training and to prove she is ready. However Lightning Dust still feels bitterness towards Dash and holds a grudge agains her, but Rainbow Dash tries to put their past behind them. It would be a good episode of why holding a grudge against someone isn’t always a good thing.
