Well only after season 5 they associated with him more and treat him better.
Most if not all of the things he did were revealed to be part of a never-ending test of Humanity and it’s allies.
Being a trickster mentor whose lessons benefitted the human race every time he showed up (after season 1) doesn’t excuse dick moves. XD
That was for the best because it allowed the Alpha and Beta quadrants to prepare for their arrival.

He betrayed ponies because Tirek said him he could lose his freedom if continue help them, no cause the other ponies were angry to him.
I think it was more mind raping than mind control, hence why he didn’t realised that they were no longer “discorded.”
When he conquered their world and broke their minds in season 2, duh!
