Then again those instances were played two entirely different ways for different purposes.
 
As for the couple themselves, I’ve found always (well always since crystal empire) found them be quite enjoyable characters.  
Shining Armor with his goofy jovial bravado/laid back attitude and jokes; Cadance with her more sympathetic approach to interacting with others, her being the more down to earth princesses (In comparison to Luna and Tia see the “Play your part” song and the scene of Twilight entering the stadium in Equestria Games) which makes for good contrast, and her willingness to choke out smile in the worst of times is endearing to me. As a couple, while we haven’t gotten to see the parameters of their relationship, is still interesting me due to how the strength of it expressed be it during Crystal Empire with Shining choose to stay behind and support his wife (figuratively and literally) or the ending bit of Slice of Life. The strength is expressed with actions not just “i love you”s and cute nick names which I very much prefer. Here’s hoping that the baby doesn’t cause the writers to make these chill ponies unnecessarily quirky and sappy; well at least that’s what I hope.

That would be a fun setup. My only concern is that we’ve seen a sleep-deprived Cadance before. She wasn’t as comical as Twilight’s “hay in the apple” mindset. Maybe Shining Armor could provide the humor.
 
I’m hoping I’m wrong and this could mean something more for them both. Too soon to tell.

I’m looking forward to the episode where Twilight Sparkle has to babysit for them because they haven’t gotten a decent night’s sleep in weeks. There’s a LOT of “new parent” jokes the writers could run with here.

A royal foal was inevitable, so I can’t claim any surprise. Seeing as this show is aimed at girls and tries to promote princesshood as a merchandising vehicle (like Disney) I’m expecting a filly. Would rather it not be an alicorn but that seems to be synonymous with the title.
 
I’m actually disappointed by my own sense of “meh”. Cadance and Shining don’t seem any more interesting to me than when they married. I think they’ll be perfect parents who don’t struggle with this new responsibility because that’s the image they present. Plus they’ll have the support of an empire so it’s not as if they’ll lack for supplies, help, or other resources.
