less fans means less seasons, less good writers and less good episodes

that’s why fans shouldn’t bully other fans, it’s just gonna hurt everyone in the end

Leaving a fandom is general internet phenomenon. I recall in furry fandom in the 90s, there would be people who’d regularly get upset about something and make a big deal about “leaving the fandom”, only to reappear a week later. After awhile, it was especially hard to tell when certain people were actually serious.

I have a feeling it’s probably intended in the person’s own mind as “I’m upset! You’ll regret that!” but it tends to come off as a really whiny “I’m upset! Pay attention to meeeeeee!

I think it’s a case of burnout because a person held onto a fandom for way longer than they should have. Instead of just letting go and doing something that’s actually fun, now said person is incredibly frustrated by the fandom. They can’t let it go, and won’t be happy unless other people are just as upset at the fandom as they are. So, they troll others and act really shitty about it. Eventually, people either just come back after they’ve calmed down, or eventually get the clue that others aren’t going to join in their little hate parade.

Usually when people actually leave for real, it’s without any sort of fanfare.

4 years in the fandom and one thing I noticed it that people who throw up a stink about leaving generally were not heavily invested in the fandom in the first place (as in “its sad you’re leaving but who are you and when did you enter”)

On the other hand, people who are heavily invested (attend conventions, draw art, own merch… etc) just tend to disappear into the night without a peep (think Cartoonlion or ecmajor)

@Tragiclady
This is what I actually do, but with several different aspects:

I’ve been active in the following fandoms:

Non-fiction ones: My fav sports team, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, vanity plates/closing logos, fantasy cinema and the band Supertramp.

Fiction ones: Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Urusei Yatsura, Slayers, Crayon Shin Chan, Kinnikuman, Astro Boy/Osamu Tezuka’s world, The Simpsons, the James Bond series, Adventure Time and MLP:FIM (different case: I’m a fan of teh fandom).

Nowadays I’m only VERY active here and my sports team, fairly active in vanity plates/closing logos (heck, I’m an admin on a wiki), fantasy cinema and James Bond and on and off in Kinnikuman, AT and UY.
But that doesn’t mean I think that it’s cool to hate in my past fandoms (especially on the Osamu Tezuka one: it’s the fandom that I remember and cherish the most). In fact, with the partial exception of The Simpsons, I still freakin’ LOVE all the topics above…

What picks my curiosity is the following: Is hating - and bragging about it and bullying the current fans - on the fandom AND the show you LOVED in the past a brony thing, or a general internet phenomenon?

EDIT: I assume that “leaving a fandom” means just that. I’m actually referring to the rule of three “Leave x fandom - the show sucks - brag about it”, with the optional “I’m gonna troll these suckas so bad”.

@Scrounge
In my case, I wouldn’t say anything. If I somehow had fans or friends, I’d say something along the lines of.

“I’m taking a temporary break to pursue other interests, work on real life stuff, treat my many mental issues. I’ll be back before too long and be happy to discuss anything we’ve missed.”

While I try to watch new episodes before browsing this website and getting talked out of watching episodes, I’ve never really gone though all that great lengths to avoid spoilers. I’d count that as more of a break. For leaving fandoms, I’d count that in months and years :3

One thing I’ve always wondered about the “leaving the fandom” thing…

Would it count as “Leaving The Fandom”TM if you say when you intend to back? For example, hypothetically, if I were to take a break between when THE MOVIE hits theaters and when I can actually see it because there’s probably gonna be unmarked spoilers plastered over half the internet, would that be considered bullshit drama?

I tried to leave once. Failed miserably of course. I’m addicted and trapped in an adorable purgatory.
I’m hoping the Movie can give me the closure I need so I can move on but the idea of saying goodbye forever to these characters is an intimidating one. I fear I’m here to the bitter end.
