I had thought Kirins and Qilins were separate species, but I may not be completely remembering what I had read about it in the past… <w<
Hippogriffs are explicitly hybrids in mythology and Kirins are as chimeric as the dragons they half resemble. Them being hybrids or even a word for a hybrid of that particular combination was a fandom thing made from the mistake of thinking them looking like dragons in the face implied some common genetic ancestry.
Aren’t kirin/qilin different from draconies though?
In Ancient China, they’re called Kirins, like from Monster Hunter.
Like with Kirins and Hippogriffs? In many mythologies, they’re their own species, even if they didn’t start that way.
But they aren’t hybrids in the sense a bird and cat mated to make them.
Not like this pony and many ocs with similar origin.
They are the hybrid of Eagles and Lions, or any bird and cat in the show’s case.
Griffins are not hybrids, they’re chimeric.

Considering mythology is full of hybrids and that magic and creatures were capable of creating either hybrids or even new races from unions, I don’t see how it’s out of place in a setting mostly based on Greek mythology with ties with others.
