Description
Everyone loves a good tragic hero, right? So what if defeating Tirek had gone a little bit worse for our dear princess?
While she was still successful in defeating Tirek using the alicorn magic boost, Tirek took her down with him in a spectacular self sacrificing explosion.
This is something I’ve been working on for a while, I have some stuff written down and a few “progression” pictures as we explore the grim tragedy of the hero princess of Equestria, and her battle to return to as much of a normal life as can be expected when all your limbs have been burned and/or blown off.
(Note that there are not two Twilights in a double ended bed, but due to the assymetry of her injuries, I wanted to show both sides of the pony as it were)

While horns with “velvet” intrigue me, I’d expect they’re hard and smooth like a narwhal tusk. For coloration, I expect them to have the same pigmentation cells in the horn-bed that keeps it growing, same as their fur pigmentation.
Doing some more research on the matter (as one does) I find it most likely that unicorn horns grow much in the same way as say a rhinoceros. with a living bone core surrounded by keratin. As such I concede that it would likely be one of the stronger parts of a unicorns body.
Now the question is, as the horns are the same color as the ponies’ fur, are they fur covered, like a giraffe? or is the keratin magically the same color as the coat?
Lots of oomph, but unless the blast pressure was incredibly uneven and just happened to hit her horn, she’s likely to keep it intact. I’d assume a horn is one of the hardest (pun intended) pieces of the pony body to break without tools and purpose.

In the story scrap I Have, her right wing gets torn off by tirek, and her left side takes the brunt of the blast after she deals the killing blow, but in this picture the burns are on the wrong side, and the wings are mirrored.

Oh I’m sure there was plenty of oomph in that blast of his, just look at the end result above.
I was toying with the idea of taking her horn as well, but i figured her sight and all of her extremities was “bad enough” like I said.. I’m not THAT mean.
I like a good comeback story, and It’s far more interesting, to me at least, to see someone fight their way back to a normal life after suffering a terrible ordeal, and truth be told I’m not sure my headcanon of twilight would have fared well losing her magic, let alone her magic AND all her limbs.
And then there’s whether it fits the story. This was one of Tirek’s blasts, and it’s pretty hard (I assume) to break a unicorn’s horn with just a heated concussive shockwave, and not also break every other bone in her body.
