Description

The Guard stands tall, his spear at his side. His keen eyes watching over the cobblestone square.
The role of an Honour Guard may not be an exciting one, but he is proud to have such a distinguished title.

Alright.
It’s just that I am the artiest of the piece and I see no problem with talking about my art in the comment section of said piece, and I definitely do not see how a discussion as such counts as spam.

But I’ll see what I can do on the form, thank you.

If someone is breaking our rules across the site, especially if they are a repeat offender, we deal with them across the site. We don’t have a process that would support enforcing some rules for some people, but not for others. However, if you would like, and have an idea of what that would look like, you can propose that in the Site & Policy forum.. It might be the kind of thing that we could create support for, once it was described.

Not all artists feel the same way, and we ask that people take tangental conversations and arguments to the forums. In any case, combined with other things they have been doing on the site it was time for us to ask them to take a break.

If you’d like to talk about this artist’s work, please do. But if you want to discuss threats to the royal guards and the kind of armor that you think they should be wearing to deal with those threats all the time whether the threat is imminent or not, then it’s time for you to create a thread on the forums.

The difference is the show tells us they lack that kind of training or even aptitude.
The only plainsclothes agency Celestia had was disbanded if the secret agent Sweetie drops thing is to be remotely taken seriously, and she doesn’t even plan for any fight.
She just chucks the element bearers at it and prays for the best while the guard get kicked to kingdom come due to sheer inept training.

Equality - In our state, we do not stand out.

Right About Everything
Historically, ever since standing armies became a thing, part of their job in peacetime was to look awesome and project the majesty of the state. It’s the very reason why the guards surrounding any given head of state tend to wear impressive, impractical uniforms when they’re not near any actual danger, it makes said head of state look cooler.

It also distracts from the plainclothes guards hiding in the crowd.

I’m very well aware.
But poorly designed armor on someone meant to guard anything is rout stupidity at best and willing sacrifice at worst.
Idiocy is idiocy as is perfect blind loyalty, no matter the tradition or the reason, amd I’m not one to idly allow that.

Which he’s wearing while on active duty.
Which means yes, he’s expected to fight in it.
If it’s ceremonial…
Wear it for ceremonies, not to do your actual duty.
Because again, I’d tell Celestia herself to shove it if thats what I’m expected to guard the ruler of a nation in, because all it does is bring up the question of how much good is a corpse in fancy armor in a fight?

Would you mind explaining how this would be good armor against a war mage?
Or even a well trained gryphon who can easily sit out of range?
Human armor and human weaponry do not function well in a quadrupeds grip.
They aren’t designed for it, nor would a pony using one leg to maneuver a spear be balanced in their stance.
They don’t carry shields save the ones a Unicorns casts and those can be broken far more easily then an actuall pysical shield.
You are trying to apply humanity to a situation where we would be splattered on the rocks in an instant and use it as justification for an overtly simplified suit of plate armor that lacks even the most basic protection.
Even his throat is plainly exposed and seeing as its a far larger target then ahuman neck, and peytrals and gorgets are a thing, it’s still worthless as armor.

I’m well aware of what they are, and my counter is again magic, flight and a horrible habit of using no military tactics.
Wearing a cuirass, full plate or otherwise, doesn’t guarantee you live in a fight if your limbs are still able to be struck and crippled, and stomach is all but fully exposed to creatures already leagues above you in physical potential and weapon prowess do to natural dexterity.
And mounted cavalry hardly applies when 90% of the sapient species are quadrupeds.
Who are again capable of flight. And weather manipulation. And concussive spell work that’d bypass armor and pulp organs without proper enchanting and coverage.
They still are severely under prepared for any competent threat and their armor is lackluster in it’s design, ceremonial or not.
The shows style just does not work for armor when the horse is the primary combatent instead of whats riding it.

Fair enough, but with the propensity of opulant and wasted resources in their world I find it hard to believe they have that presence of mind, nor the lack of materials to create stronger materials.
Being spearing armor, that would mean the majority of the army should not be trained solely in it’s use, and they lack the majority of the armor proper regardless as even partial plate was paired with padded cloth or chain, and we’ve never seen any of them carry any form of shield or extraneous form of protection.
A half decent cleave would sever their legs and gut them easily.
Adding to that if all you have is spears, you hardly have the means to react to a competent military threat, especially in a world were a good deal of the races have flight and magical capabilities.
which does make sense considering their canon track record against every threat from here to back again, but still, caring more about tradition in this case has proven to be a fools endeavor.

Who says it is gold? It’s most likely brass.
There are specific rolls in the real world where very spearing armour like this was worn.
