Exactly. It also encourages subjects to join the secret rebellions under the assumption that they’d do a better job. Dealing with them in a quiet and non-fatal way prevents most usurpers from having a clear reason to steal the throne.
Because the latter option forces them to work in secret, making it all the harder to deal with them?

The story is about a ‘weak, kindly, and foolish Dragon Lord’ getting overthrown and replaced. Ember has been described as being kindly. By dragon standards, anyway.
Was Smolder basically saying that given the chance, she’d overthrow Ember and take her place? And is that why Ember sent Smolder off to the Friendship School?

I think that position is uncomfortable for a lot of guys on account of, you know, testicles.
Not to mention the way he crosses his legs like that. I mean, I do that too. Compared to the traditional ‘manly’ leg-cross where the foreleg is propped over the knee, the ‘girly’ cross is comftier, leaves you with a bit of lap for a laptop or tablet, takes up less room on a bus or crowded bench, you don’t show people the underside of your shoe, and there’s less risk of you smearing passersby with dirt by accident. Still, what a sissy, riiiiiight? ;P
