My little thing about the Princesses ruling Equestria with an iron fist. You’ve seen it before in previous pics. Added Cadance and Shining Armor to the mix. I always like my Princesses to kick ass and take names.
They may be from before nightmare moon also she dose seam to have a better head for tactics arguing to go up her self wen the crystal empire returned instead of just a minuscule group of CIVILIANS. Yes the main 6 are good but that should have been a job for the army and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say she would take at least some troops.

Pike & Shot was a military formation that used both spears and muskets then rifles, dominating warfare at least from the 17th century into the 18th century, the pike eventually phased out by the bayonet combining the pike with the rifle, but tactics stayed very similar up until WWI.
As for the airships, well, dragoons were mounted infantry that rode into battle carrying lances and guns–pistols or carbines. Dragoons were active in Europe starting in the 18th century up through WWI, a logical extension of the Reiter that dominated from the 13th to 17th centuries with similar tactics. The use of dragoons were curtailed by the machinegun and trench warfare, but still means they were around long enough for zeppelins to reach their peak during WWI.
So, there’s two perfectly reasonable explanations for this awesome painting; The first is that Equestria is gearing up for its WWI where a new invention like the machinegun is about to put a violent end to centuries of tradition and its evolution (armor, dragoons, pike & shot, etc).
The other is that this is a parade, and the armor, pikes, etc. are for show. To this day plate armored dragoons are still used in parades in Europe. Similarly Royal Guards still parade in armor with pikes (the Swiss Guard, for example).
So yeah, it’s an awesome pic and not really anachronistic at all. If history had twisted a bit differently, the real world could’ve looked a lot like this.
But why do the guards remind me of Clonetroopers? Must be the T-Visor on the helmets…
Luna brings the fear.
Cadance…
Cadance makes you like it.
