I mean I would put in a lot of nods to my favorite video games if I ever got a chance to illustrate a background to a fan comic.
background is key in making a scene that is otherwise boring or is okay to tune out to if it doesn’t progress the plot. and of course, less is more, both in how much you put in a panel, and how often it happens. all of this is obvious, but it’s what i think when i see stuff like it.
i always wanted to make a comic, but i never pracrice what i preach lol. still worth remembering, though.
I agree. It might be typical of us to put background gags in our comics and its nice to see the comic artists follow suit as well but with Andy’s gags its….ugh too much. It takes me out of the experience. Then again, I would probably be a hypocrite if I ever drew a comic.
yeah to both. the background gags are usually what wig me out. i do like that sort of humour, and i’m probably exaggerating, but i feel like i see it a lot in his work.
So what you’re saying is not everything needs to have a reaction from the characters?
For the background, are you talking about his background gags?
more or less. but it’s also less about how comical the faces look, and more that he plays up the reactions of any present character in a single panel. it isn’t even just about how a face looks, it’s that andy feels the need to have the characters react to stuff instead of standing there. i feel he adds too much and it becomes too bloated, even stuff that happens in the background
Edited
Because he kills moods with overexaggerated faces?
