Y’know, I still don’t understand why people hate Sonic Boom. It ain’t so bad! Besides, I watched it when I was a kid.
Anyway, Derpy looks cool like that. Just wait till Luna watches Sonic Prime and plays Sonic Frontiers.

Yeah, the cartoon was more popular.
The 3DS games had some fans. Only person I saw who liked “Rise of Lyric” was Andre of “Black Nerd Comedy.” He even jokingly calls himself a “hipster Sonic fan” for liking that game lol.
I must be a hipster Sonic fan too, for liking the Shadow game, and Sonic Labyrinth. lol

Some didn’t like the games, character redesigns/personalities, and the focus on humor.
It wasn’t bad though, and had it’s moments. The villain Lyric was also kinda a unique villain, but they didn’t do much with him.

At least Sonic’s games never sucked back in the 90’s. Almost all of Sonic’s 90’s games were perfect.

Some would disagree actually, as many disliked “Spinball,” “3D Blast,” and “Sonic R.” While I liked those, I felt some of the Game Gear games like “Sonic 2,” (which is a completely different & frustrating game from the Genesis version) & “Sonic Blast” weren’t that good at all. I did like “Sonic Labyrinth” though, which is ironically his most disliked ’90s game.

When SEGA left the console market way back in 2001, Sonic’s games started going downhill from there and Sonic started to suck in his games.
Face it Sonic fans, Sonic isn’t as cool as he was back then.

Well, I kinda disagree, they didn’t start going downhill for me until later, but personally I enjoyed a few of his “disliked” games like “Sonic Heroes,” (which is considered his “jumping the shark” game) and even the Shadow game despite it’s flaws.

Also, Sonic’s still “cool” as far as I’m concerned. His 2 new upcoming games look promising, (and Sega is taking their time with them, a good sign) the new “Sonic Boom” TV show is genuinely funny at times, and his comic book series is still enjoyable. Overall, I’m glad Sonic’s still around.

Heck, I remember other game series went through similar “phases” like back in the 2000s some didn’t like “Luigi’s Mansion,” “Super Mario Sunshine,” the GBA remakes, and Party games, and felt Mario was going downhill. Then “Super Mario Galaxy” alone fixed all that. DK went through it to, after Rare went by bye, bye just getting gimmicky or spinoff games, and didn’t make a comeback until “DKC Returns” came out. People are also quite mixed on the “Star Fox” series, but it’s still a huge cult-classic series.
So Sonic’s not the only VG character who’s had issues, or controversy.

Sonic’s not doing well in his games anymore now that we have more stronger videogame consoles such as the PS4, PS Vita and Xbox One.

It seems that with every new videogame console Sonic’s new games gets more and more lamer. It makes me miss the good ol’ days back then when SEGA was still in the console market. At least Sonic’s games never sucked back in the 90’s. Almost all of Sonic’s 90’s games were perfect.

Well, the demo only lets me play the first two levels, so I don’t know. Both versions might be good. “Lost World” got mixed reviews, but it didn’t seem as hated as Sonic2006, or “Boom.”

Regardless of the backlash over the WiiU version of “Sonic Boom,” the TV series said games are based off of is doing fairly well, I hear. It’s quite amusing, and is generating quite a few animated GIFs of funny scenes from the show. (Kinda like MLP has.)

I hear it’s comic series if funny to. (Also, interestingly, that means Archie is currently making 3 different Sonic comic book series now. Not counting all the book collections/reprints, and such. The Sonic comics are doing quite well.)

I’ve heard a few people say that the Wii U version of Lost World is actually better than the 3DS one. In particular, one reviewer felt that the 3DS one had worse level design and didn’t implement the Wisps as well as the Wii U version did. I can’t remember the specifics of what he said regarding those, but he also said that the Special Stages in the 3DS version actually made him physically ill at points, which he thought was a shame since it was a tribute to the Blue Sphere special stage from Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Shame, and yeah “Episode 2” looked like an improvement, so it’s a shame they didn’t continue it…
(Though, some felt the Episodes were a bit overpriced at $15 each, and some Nintendo fans who owned S3:ep.1 on Wii, were upset they didn’t get Episode 2. Surprising, considering Sonic games usually sell better on Nintendo consoles. Alot of X-Box fans, and such hate Sonic.)

I played the 3DS demo of “Lost World,” and it’s actually pretty good. My only minor gripe is, now you have to hold down the R-button to make Sonic “run.” (I like it better when Sonic would run faster automatically.) I think the DLC looks cool, and I like how it has some nods to the older games, like the old badniks, and such.
The new “Deadly Six” villains are kinda interesting as they’re almost like the Sonic-equivilent of the Koopalings.

I liked the “Rush” DS games, but I suppose the trick/boost meter system was a bit overpowered. (They kinda fixed that/nerfed it in “Sonic Colors DS.” So you have to use it more wisely in it, and not constantly.)

Yeah, at least they tried to fix “Ride of Lyric,” but still it wasn’t enough to satisfy some fans.
Also, the 3DS “Sonic Boom” game was a li’l better then the WiiU game. (Not perfect, but judging from the demo, it’s not bad.)

Yeah, it’s a good thing we have the internet now to get updates for games. Still, I wish Sega would take more time to flesh-out the games, and such.

Apparently Sonic 4 was originally going to be 3 episodes, but due to low sales they only ended up making 2. Still, Episode II DID fix most of the issues from Episode I (the levels and bosses weren’t carbon copies of old levels and bosses, the music was better, the physics engine was fixed, etc.).

And I plan on getting the Wii U version of Lost World at some point. Not sure if I want to get Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal on the 3DS, though… I hear it’s pretty similar to Sonic Rush in gameplay style, and as much as I liked Rush and Rush Adventure, I kind of got sick of that gameplay style after a while.

And give SEGA some credit; for Rise of Lyric, they actually released a patch fixing some of the more glaring bugs. Still doesn’t fix some of the core issues with the gameplay, but it’s still more than they ever did for Sonic ’06.

And they also addressed a few complaints regarding some odd quirks of the early versions of the Wii U Lost World by patching them (in particular the odd absence of “100 Rings = Extra Life”).

I kinda disagree, while the series has it’s faults, not all his modern games are bad. (In fact, “Generations,” & “Sonic Colors” were pretty well received. Some even liked “Unleashed” despite the controversial “Warehog” gimmick.) Even the 3DS version of “Sonic Boom,” and it’s TV adaption are getting some praise despite the rather unfinished console SB game. (Which wasn’t even made by Sega, or Sonic Team.)

Also, I get tired of the usual bias that “only 2D Sonic games are good.” (Even though I do love the 2D games to, I like the 3D ones to, especially the earlier ones like the SA game, and “Heroes.”)
Play some of the Game Gear ones, “Sonic Blast” in particular, which weren’t very well done, and very sluggish compared to the 16-bit Sonic games. (Though, I did like “Sonic Labyrinth” despite the hate it gets. “Tails Adventures” was great to, despite being a more “Metroidvania”-style game.)
So 2D doesn’t automatically mean “great” either. (Heck, look how unfinished the GBA remake of Sonic 1 was. Luckily the new 3DS Eshop remake is perfect.) I’ve played both good, and bad 3D Sonic games, but I feel there are some good or bad 2D games, as well.

Also, you’re forgetting about the “Sonic Rush” games which were also side-scrollers, and both were pretty good. (Even if the “boost/trick” feature was a bit overpowered at times, which they fixed/nerfed in “Sonic Colors DS.”)

Also, in regards to all your “Sonic is dead” remarks, despite his “hit or miss” games, and how half the internet hates him now, he’s still got quite the fanbase, his games sell well regardless, he has a new TV series, and even his official comic series is still going. (In fact, said comic series is doing so well, it has THREE ongoing simultaneous series currently, not counting all the reprints, quarterly magazine, and such.) Not the signs of a “dead” game character…
Honestly, Sonic is more “alive” then Crash Bandicoot, Earthworm Jim, and alot of other famous ‘90s video game heroes. (Heck arguably, he’s more alive then Megaman…)

Lastly, Sega & Sonic Team actually have addressed some fan/critic complaints about the series if you look closer at the modern games. Like for instance…
  • They bitched about the series “Having to many playable characters,” so Sega regulated them to cameos, and made Sonic, AND only Sonic playable in almost every Sonic game sense 2006.
  • Fans complained about the series getting to “dark,” so they added more comedy, and made the human designs more cartoony, had Sonic fight monsters less often, and such.
  • Fans wanted a new 2D game like the old Genesis games, so they made Sonic 4. (And the reason it was divided into 2 “episodes,” was one of the same reasons Sonic 3 was divided into Sonic 3, and S&K, so they could get the game out faster. Also apparently so they could see what fans liked/didn’t like about it, and use it to improve Episode 2, and such.)
So apparently, Sega has been addressing fan-complaints, the problem is when they fix one problem, they accidently create more, or nit-picky fans try to find more. (Now complaining about the gameplay/physics, or glitches is one thing, but complaining about Sonic’s eye color, or the game not being 100% like Sonic 1 like Nicochi does, is a rather silly…)

Another problem is every Sonic fan seems to have their own prefered version of Sonic. Some fans feel the series should be more platforming, and less speed, so then Sega tries to make a game like that, (Like “Sonic Lost World,”) then OTHER fans complain they aren’t fast enough, and they need to be faster. Some Sonic fans can’t be pleased no matter what they do with the series. Some even demonize the modern 2D games, so “3D” isn’t the problem with the series. It’s that Sega tends to hurry the development to much, and doesn’t have good bug-testers. Still, I feel occasionally Sega can churn out a good/decent Sonic game, so I feel there’s still hope for the blue blur.

Sonic Boom… Sigh! Yet ANOTHER Bad Sonic Game comes out of the garbage can full of new and crappy Sonic games that SEGA keeps making. I’m not supprised through. SEGA’s been making too many bad Sonic games for years since the end of the Rivals series way back in 2008. I belive the reason why Sonic’s doing so badly in his new games now is because SEGA has moved him away from his 2D games.

The last true 2D game that Sonic was in was Sonic Advance 3. And Sonic Rivals 2 was probably Sonic’s last 2D-style gameplay due to the one track road strip that Sonic was running on. It was pretty straightforward and didn’t have the four shift left-left-left-left, right-right-right-right road track you usally see in most 3D Sonic games right now.

After that imatites bombs falling ‘Boom!’. Sonic just died after that and my guess is until SEGA finally decides to bring Sonic back to full 2D games or make another 2D-style 3D Sonic game like Rivals he’ll remain dead in his grave. And yes I know about Sonic 4, Colors and Lost World. Sonic 4 came pretty close to restoring the classic Genisis Sonic games.

…Unfortually, SEGA messed it up yet again by adding needlessly new super moves for Sonic and co and the Sonic 4 game is released in downloadable parts rather than a full game on CD-Rom like all the other Sonic games up to now which just adds insult to injury.

It’s clear that SEGA’s only doing this for the money and not to please the Sonic fans. If they are ACTUALLY doing this to please the Sonic fans they would’ve already fixed the bad Sonic games YEARS ago… It’s a shame SEGA keep making the same mistakes again and again. You’d think they would’ve learned their lesson by now that 3D is NOT one of Sonic’s strong points in videogames. 2D is.

I’ll consider it maybe later. Despite the odd storyline, the game’s cinema scenes were pretty well-animated, I’ll admit.

To be fair, some of the Sonic games after Sonic’06 were pretty well-received. (“Sonic Rush Adventure,” “Sonic Colors,” and “Generations” for example. Even “Unleashed” had it’s fans, and such.)

@Rpground
Yeah, good point. People can say what they want about Sega, & Sonic Team, but they do learn from their mistakes sometimes, and do listen to critiques.

The problem is, whenever they correct those mistakes, sometimes they end up making more by accident, or the directions they take the series to please one half of the Sonic fanbase, makes the other half angry.
(Like I said about the whole “darker tone VS lighter tone,” or “speed VS platforming,” “old-scool VS new-school,” or “playable character” debates about Sonic, and such in my previous posts.)

At this point no matter what direction they take Sonic, they can’t please everyone. Doesn’t help some Sonic-fans, and haters alike don’t want to be pleased… (Plus, some just hate-on Sonic ‘cause it’s the “cool” thing on the internet now.) So it must be difficult for Sega to know who to listen to…

Do yourself a favor and Youtube the ending. It’s perhaps one of the most bullshit endings ever, but yeah, it does indeed recon itself out of existence. It’s actually quite hilarious.

@Rpground
The lesson is the same as with every rushed game, dating back to 2600 Pac-Man. If you don’t give it the love it needs, it’s going to turn out shitty. That it hasn’t been drilled into everyone’s heads yet, that we still get shit that’s Sonic 06 bad from the likes of EA, Sega and Ubisoft, says plenty about the industry’s inability to learn anything.

I haven’t played through Sonic’06 personally, so I wouldn’t know, but yeah, I heard the ending of Sonic’06 pretty much ||retconned all the events of said game from ever happening. Always seemed kinda “cheap” to me personally. || Though, considering how hated the game is by Sonic-fans, and haters alike, maybe it was for the best.

That would be like replacing Mario’s Bowser with Mouser (that bomb throwing mouse) at the main villain…it makes no sense…also isn’t he dead? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m fairly sure he’s dead…much less doesn’t even exist anymore thanks to the ending of 06…

Yeah, I know what you mean. Some critiques that fans have can be an improvement, but not all of their ideas are “great.”

One guy I saw wanted them to kill-off Dr. Eggman/Robotnik in the Archie Sonic comic permanently, and replace him with Mephiles as the main villain… (As in a character from one of the more disliked-Sonic games…)
I’m pretty sure the majority of Sonic fans would hate that. (And Sega wouldn’t go for it either.)

I hate to say it, but you might be right. Like whenever they make a game more focused on speed, people complain it needs more platforming, and fewer “speed” segments.” Then when they slow down a game, and add more platforming, (like say “Sonic Lost World”) then people complain it’s not fast enough.

Also, people complained about the series “having to many characters,” (probably due to “Sonic Heroes” and the SA games) so then they started using them less, and started making games with only Sonic playable, and that also wasn’t enough to satisfy the Sonic fans, or critics who oddly still make that complaint, or claim that’s why the “Sonic series sux.” (Meanwhile everybody was fine with “Super Mario 3D World” having 5 playable characters, and “Hyrule Warriors” letting you play as tons of Zelda characters.)

Sega can’t win, even when they try to address fan/critic complaints.

One thing Sega is “doing right” lately though is definitely their “3D Classics” games on 3DS, developed by M2. I have Sonic 1, Shinobi 3, and Streets of Rage on my 3DS, and all of them are pretty well done, and play like the originals. (And Sonic 1 does kinda benefit from the optional “spindash,” especially in the Labyrinth Zoen)
They recently released Sega arcade classic “3D After Burner II” on 3DS, with more on the way. (Including “Fantasy Zone 1 & 2”) Hope they do Sonic 2 & Streets of Rage 2, as well eventually.

My only problem with the “Shadow” game honestly was it just wasn’t quite “finished” being made. (Granted it was much more finished then Sonic2006, and Sonic Boom debatably.) It also took a li’l getting used to. It also suffered another problem many 3D Sonic games had of having alot of “bottomless pits” surrounding stages.

I also suppose it’s darker story, creepy villain, the weapons/vehicles, and such probably felt out of place for a “Sonic” game, but people forget it wasn’t a “Sonic” game, it was a “Shadow” game. So I don’t mind them doing some things differently, or being a li’l “lol edgy” in it at times. (Still, I can’t help, but chuckle at the game’s overuse of the word “damn.”) But it still had some of the same Sonic features, platforming, speed, and charm the series is known for, and I liked some of it’s features like the alternate level routes, and such.
Also, the game story-wise helped bring some closure to Shadow’s angst/issues.

Funny thing is, after Sonic fans complained about them making the series to “dark” (like with the Shadow game, and Sonic2006) they started making games lighter, and more comical to address that “problem.” Now Sonic fans are complaining the games are getting “to lighter/kiddy,” and not “dark/edgy” enough…
Can’t please everybody, I guess.
