Geordi has been at ops a few times. Sure it’s usually Data’s position, but they share. And while Q wasn’t a crewmember, he did want to be one, and he temporarily became a civilian consultant during “Deja Q.”

Understandable. I wouldn’t want him to just pass by in the background or something in a referential way either, but to have him reference something outside Equestrian context while he happens to be part of the story…

I’m basically saying that if you have a story centered around Discord as a key player, they are fine to throw in pop culture references. On the other hand, to have Discord show up in a bit role and throw out a pop culture reference, that’s a bit too much. And yes, not going to be the case on the show but can be an issue for comics, as well as for those writing fic, etc.

Due to Discord’s nature, they could probably work in the jokes in a similar way to how Disney used Genie to “sneak” references into the Aladdin movies.
 
And I am now picturing Discord taking Genie’s place in the Aladdin movies…

Well thet thing is, In the show, Discord is voiced by a big star name, which actually limits a lot what they can do with the character, and only use him when they REALLY need to use him, since I don’t believe deLancie work comes cheap.
 
In other words, he can’t be used for a throwaway gag every now and then, if Discord appears in the episode it will either be a big budget one (season premier, finale) or an episode centered almost completely on him.
 
On the other hand, the comic writers can go crazy and add him whenever they want doing and saying whatever they want, no matter how irrelevant or small the participation is…but it will never happen in the show.

Between this comic and “Three’s a Crowd”, there’s a definite danger to using Discord just to play around with pop culture references that would otherwise be impossible to include without breaking the world mold. I’m not saying either of these stories have done that (since Discord is a story-driver in both cases, the luggage of pop culture references in tow), but I can easily see the potential for a story just to include Discord to include pop culture references for the sake of it.
 
If they could have worked Discord in Q’s outfit in “Glass of Water”, sure, that would have been great, but, say, if he dressed like that during the S4 opener, that would have been completely gratuitous.
