Cool! I remember Ian Flynn teased Wendy years back, (saying he wouldn’t mind bringing her back) but I never expected him to use her. Can’t wait to see it. (Shame I don’t subscribe to the comics anymore… Maybe I’ll consider it now that I might be able to afford to now.)

I’m looking forward to seeing Lupe’s new design. I know a lot of SatA.M. fans hate the new redesigns (especially Sally’s less fan-servicey clothed look) but it’s kinda interesting to see old characters reimagined.
(I cheered when they brought Tirek & the Smooze back in MLP.)

@Beau Skunky
You are in luck. Latest issue of the main book has Wendy and implies her Witchcarters will be appearing soon. And Naugus is still in the book too (as Walter). The two are actually siblings, a part of the Troll species.

Most of the SatAM characters are fair game. Lupe is coming back, for example, albeit with a more SEGA style redesign.

lol I used to go to the Bumbleking forums (Ian Flynn’s board) a lot. (I go by “Count Koopula” there.)
Some of the game tie-ins were actually pretty good, though some earlier ones barely had anything to do with said games. (Like the “Sonic CD” story lacked any mention of “Little Planet,” and such.) They were still entertaining though. They oddly adapted the “Warehog” into the current storyline, but while they aren’t doing an exact “Sonic Unleashed” full adaption, they are kinda making good use of some of the plot-points from that game in the current story arcs. (I must add Professor Pickle is funny.)

I actually wouldn’t mind seeing the obscure “Tails Sky Patrol” characters. They already adapted the Battle Bird Armada villains from the “Tails Adventure” game, (probably my favorite Game Gear game, apparently writer Ian Flynn likes that game a lot too) and I thought it was genius they linked Bean the Duck, (Sonic Fighters) and the Babylon Rogues (Sonic Riders series) to them.
It would be cool if Wendy Witchkart had some past with the wizard Naugus (yes, he’s still allowed in the comics) somehow.
I’m curious if they can use Tiara (from the cancelled “Sonic Xtreme” game) in the comic. They did bring in Honey the cat recently, and she was a scrapped character too.

Yeah, that’s why I’m greatful the Sonic comics are still going to this day. It’s the only thing left keeping classic Sonic characters like Nack/Fang, Bean, Bark, Mighty, Princess Sally, the other Freedom Fighters, and many others around still.
Sega hasn’t really brought back any older Sonic characters sense Team Chaotix, and Metal Sonic in 2003’s “Sonic Heroes.” I wish they would do like Nintendo and bring back old characters. (And other old Sega games.)

And yeah, Titan Tails would make for a good joke. :P (They did reference Mama Robotnik & Wes Weasly in the “Off Panel” gags before, I recall.)

Man, we should derail this in the Bumbleking Forums. XD I’m still at the pre genesis era. Where most of the SATAM characters were still being in tacked. I’m in issue 41 after that obvious event. I might try to read every issue because I want to see the cringy big hiccups that the writers made in the past. Even the tie-in game arcs lmao.

I believe the last one shot game characters should be the Tails Skypatrol Characters. But till recently in the Mobius Encyclopedia (Archie Sonic wiki) they’re bringing back Wendy Witchcart. Speaking about one shots, I also heard from a really old past Q&A in Ian Flynn’s youtube account that he is considering on tying in Sonic Xtreme. But he can’t, because the story in that game is way contextless. But he has plans on bringing Tira sometime in the series’ future in one source.

Though, I’ve heard that game also had 7 stories before the production’s final cancellation. (Which I’m afraid on showing Ian because he doesn’t take fan ideas personally) Some stories are AU, some are within the SATAM universe with Tiara being involved, and some are canon to the video game universe, which would’ve been Sonic’s first adventure canon in 3D before SA and Shuffle. Still, even if Tira made an appearance, she could be a one shot or appearing few games each much like the Nack/Fang the Sniper, Mighty the Armadillo, Ray, and all of those unfortunately trashed characters.

AndI have a feeling Titan Tails could be in a next Off Panel-verse lmao.

Admittedly, I wasn’t to big on Ron Lim either. I don’t think he made any character look right. (And made them quite lanky looking.)
Maybe he should stick to DC & Marvel characters.

I don’t know, Butler drew them a bit of a mix of more realistic and anime, and he wasn’t to bad. Though I kinda prefer artists who draw them like Sonic characters. Jay Axer drew them as kinda in proportion to a Sonic character but more detailed. (And sometimes went overboard with the fan-service with the female characters.)
Yardley is by far my fav’ Sonic comic artist. His style seems to be a mix of modern Sonic, “Sonic X” Sonic, and his own unique facial expressions.
Ben Bates was pretty good too. (Ben also did work for TMNT, and the MLP comics. Sadly, he doesn’t do comic art at the time.)

lol “Titan Tails,” even the current Sonic comic staff make fun of it when fans bring it up.

Oh god! Ron Lim is arguably one of the worst to medicore artist ever! It makes Ken Pender’s lara-su chronicles look alot more pleasant in the eye than what he had drew. And Dave Manak look like a professional comic artist. I liked some unique proportions to Sonic’s face because he’s trying to anime-fy him to what the post 2000s games were doing, but… Tails’ nose is just not right.

And I looked at his portfolio on his other comic art. And he could make all of those Marvel and DC comic characters look amazing, but he doesn’t do that with Sonic.

Definite. If Ian chose an artist who does “realistic” porportions, then the comic will be really unmemorable. Yardley is pretty much the Messiah as I’ve looked at his panels and pages that he has done. It’s like watching a TV show in a book! Problem being that I don’t know what characters are being voiced other than the canon game character’s voice. XD

And I’ve read his Mecha Madness at first. And I thought it was something that Sonic did stupid. But after rereading the previous issues… yeah, I think he’s like the Dave Polsky of MLP. Just within the ties of Daring Don’t. (Not the whole DD and Zotl being real and stuff) But could be for another time.

The one thing that I’ve remembered that is possibly the worst though in the history in this comic asiding that, was… Titan Tails…

Yeah, I admit the Ron Lim are and such kinda turned me off the comics. Yardley was the first artist I saw in 2006 who drew Sonic & Co. like Sonic characters to me. I have nothing against some artists like Spaz, and Stephen Butler, but they kinda made them look like anime’ furries to much at times. (Though, they were still good artists.)

Shame ‘cause the 2006 ones by Ian Flynn were better, and he did a much better job on the series then Ken. (And I agree he & Yardley saved the series for me to, during a time when I grew soured with it.) Admittedly I do like Michael Gallagher’s old campy stories, though I didn’t like his ending to “Mecha Madness.” (And the trial story afterwords.) He was not very good with more serious stories.

I think they brought back Hal & Cal in “Sonic Universe” (the secondary comic) a few years ago. (Before the Genesis wave.) Pseudo Sonic & the classic badniks have been brought back before, as well.

I’ll admit, I haven’t read any of the comics. I read some from the Pre-Genesis Wave though. Mainly the Sonic Mini Series (Which is pretty much a nullified canon at this point) and issues 1-10. (Or, the Mike Gallagher era) and one of the issues where they battle the Neo Metal Sonic horde/troopers.

I haven’t read any of the post 2000s stories because of how atrocious the artwork were back then. But because of Tracy Yardly, and others at least when he first started this, he saved this comic for me. I don’t like Patrick Spaziante in the post 2000s and 90s comics. Though, he did improve in the future issues after.

I’ll admit, I first loved those issues because it doesn’t make any mind fucks compared to what it is today. But… those prime comics are just… bleh. Still, Mike Gallagher is an OKAY writer compare to Ken. There are some characters that were used in the future issues in the series that I remembered liking. Like Al and CAl, Pseudo Sonic, (Who is possibly still in this universe despite him being destroyed) and the classical Badniks.

And ironically, said writer Ken “do not steal” Penders didn’t even make Finitevus. (Artist Jonathan Grey did.) So I’m curious why they had to get rid of him, and the other characters that weren’t made by him.

Still, at least the SatA.M. & game characters are safe.

TLDR

The echidna that you are seeing in the image no longer canonized in the sonic archie comics anymore. Because of a recolor original character induced writer who wrote the older comics back then erased him from existence in an IRL lawsuit.

Still, the newer Robo Robotnik (Or Dr. Eggman as the original counterpart no longer exists) is still not as a hot headed evil doer and slightly unaware as his primal counterpart. To me at least.

He drew for it, (technically just “penciled” it, others did the inks, and colors) but he didn’t write the stories as far as I know. Ken said on his website he was just a “penciller” for the series.
I am curious if seeing that on his resume’ might’ve been what encouraged Sega of America & Archie Comics to hire him on the Sonic comic.

The old Zelda comics were kinda cool, (though I haven’t seen much of them) I wish Nintendo would rerelease them, if they can legally.
RWB

@Beau Skunky

He… drew and wrote for the Valiant Comic’s Zelda series?

Well, a feather in his cap for that, then, because I honestly think Valiant Comic’s Link is the best version we’ve pretty much ever had. He had the good parts of the DiC cartoon’s Link with the bad parts toned down a bit, and he was really likable all things considered.

The only other Link I consider on par with that one is Ataru Cagiva’s Link.

Worst of all, Ken even tried to get Ben Hurst (a writer/editor for the cult-classic Sonic SatA.M. show, who kept in touch with fans, and wanted to get a third season going) involved in the project, but according to Hurst, Ken basically backstabbed him… (As I explained here. Look for the huge boxed-in quote in the comments, I made.) >>719017
So technically, Ken also killed any chance at SatA.M. Sonic getting a revival/movie, or third-season.
(Makes it ironic, an Ian Flynn-hater told me they feel “Ken Penders had more respect for SatA.M. then Ian did.” Ironically, Ian actually likes that show, while I believe Ken barely even watched it. Ian’s writing even had a few in-jokes for fans, like the obscure “margerine” joke, something only SatA.M. fans would be aware of.)

There’s a rumor (not sure if this is true, but knowing Ken, it wouldn’t surprise me…) that Ken wanted to replace Robotnik with his own villain OC Dr. Ian Droid from the “Image” crossover. Ken actually said on his site, if he had his way, both Sally & Robotnik would’ve been permanently killed-off sense the “Endgame” story arc… Luckily, Sega wouldn’t let him do that. (For once, I’m thankful for “executive meddling.”)
Yeah, I’m sure young Sonic fans would’ve “loved” that… Sega insisted the “death” of Robotnik (and Sally) be only temporary, and the only reason Ken agreed to it, was because he didn’t think the comic would last another 25 issues. (Shows how “passionate” he is about the series. Granted, licensed comics usually don’t last long. It’s amazing the Sonic comic has lasted over 20 years now, and it’s closing in on the record of “longest lasting licensed-comic series.”)

Ken had some good ideas/directions for the Sonic comic, and has made good stories. (I won’t deny that.) The problem was, he didn’t want to make a comic loosely-based on a video game/cartoon series. He wanted to turn it into his own comic, as you said.
He didn’t seem passionate about any source material, or things he didn’t introduce to the series. (Ken said he refused to use Mina Mongoose, because a different writer Karl Bollers created her, and he only used her, because the editor forced him to.)
I watched an interview with Ken on Youtube where he was asked who his favorite Sonic characters were. After making the usual remark of, “that’d be like asking me who my favorite child is,” he mentioned a few characters he loved… All of which were HIS characters. He didn’t mention any Sonic Sega game characters, (not even Knuckles) nor any of the SatA.M.-Sonic cartoon ones.
Imagine the flack a fanfic-writer would get if he said something like that his favorite Sonic character/s was his OC.

I see some Sonic fans get on Ian’s case for his OCs, (even though Ian hasn’t made nearly as many as Ken…) but unlike Ken’s, Ian’s are just made to drive the plot, or serve a purpose, and they don’t outshine Sonic, and the Freedom Fighters.

I hate to sound biased, but I honestly prefer newer writer Ian Flynn, (main writer sence 2006) as he respects the source material (like the games, and SatA.M. series) more then Ken did, and judging by the things Ian has said on the Bumbleking forums, knows more about the Sonic franchise/fanbase, isn’t biased like Ken is.
biznizz

@Beau Skunky
See the Concept art For yourself And be shocked why SEGA said no.

Sonic/Image: Parallel Paradigm is the second half of a giant turd that Ken tried to sneak by everyone; with Sonic Live! as the first. In Live!, you have Ken say white people created Sonic and utilize one of the alt-Robotniks as the future Dr. Ian Droid, who was the villain of Paradigm and would’ve been the Big Bad for Lost Ones if it didn’t tank after the first issue.

Ken has NEVER had any respect for anything in the Sonic franchise; it was always a means to his own ends for creating his own playgrounds. Get tasked to write about Sonic; make Knuckles the Praetorian the most important character and have his supporting cast a soap opera. Get tasked to write a Robotnik which can rival SatAM Robotnik; use him to create his own villain for an unrelated book and say his own villains (Dark Legion) could ‘eat Eggman for breakfast if they wanted to’.

To this day I am so glad he quit the Sonic books and was never anywhere close to Mega Man. Kenders would’ve tried to pull a Nuevos Adventuras de Megaman, and replace the game characters with his own OC’s (since that’s pretty much what he did to Sonic).

I hate to say it, but that movie pitch sounds like a grimdark fanfic to me. Also, if Mobius/earth is destroyed, the Freedom Fighters don’t really have anything to battle Robotnik over, or “free” from him.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I like some of Ken’s stories/directions/characters for the Sonic comic, but some of his ideas/stories were a bit off…
Such as the “Sonic and Image Comics Crossover” that focused more on Ken’s OCs, then on the Sonic characters, OR Image Comics characters. (Which also shows Ken always had favorable bias torwards his own characters.)
biznizz

@Beau Skunky
Oh, I am aware of his stupid Cameron’s Avatar-esque insistance of calling them that. He’s even doing it to a human for some stupid reason; me & Sonic Stadium just call him Michael Taylor since Ken’s ‘‘real’’ name for him is stupid.

Also keep in mind, the not-echidnas are supposed to be aliens, yet that preview page has a skunk & cocker spaniel, with all indications that they are on the same planet before its supposed to blow up and sent Angel the Floating Island through space, killing almost everyone*.

*A plot point from Kenders’ old failed Sonic/SATAM movie pitch where Robotnik kills everyone save for Sonic & the Freedom Fighters. Presumably. Sally cring in Sonic’s arms as they watch the world blows up leaves little to the imagination. :v
