The point of such isn’t the pain, the pain is to give a physical connection to the words, because a child’s mind cannot latch onto the words as easily without a physical connection.
 
You can tell a kid not to touch a hot stove until you are blue in the face. Nothing is going to stop them until they burn themselves.
 
And, more to the point, proper application isn’t about the physical pain. The general way it is supposed to be administered is one good swat and the ‘very disappointed in you’, discussion. The pain acts as a link between the behavior and the discussion. Certainly, the words are infinitely more important than the physical action, but the action is a tether to ensure that the words resonate.
 
Anyone who goes to routinely striking a child for any misbehavior is not fit to be a parent, but there are plenty of times when one sound, open-palmed strike across the rear is called for, so long as that is not the only punishment accorded.
 
It is A tool, not the only tool.

I’m not making light of anything. That really did happen to me and I’m hurt that you just called me a liar and a troll. I went through hell but I came out the other side and I am a functioning adult.
 
There are zero studies that say spanking helps and multiple that say it harms the kid in the long run. Excuse me for thinking that hitting is wrong. If you hit an adult for wrongdoing you’d go to jail, but it’s fine to hit a child with even less ability to fight back? No, that’s wrong.
