im pretty sure it was a toyline first from conception. If the toys weren’t there, we wouldn’t have the show or the movie. Its all an overglorified commercial that happiened to have staff who cared about the content they produced.

Its mostly for two big reasons.

because they’re human, in a movie that contains the words My Little Pony, which implies a universe created for ponies, and the movie could have explored the universe we already had, instead of an uninteresting one.
skin color, it goes into the basics of uncanny valley in comparison to not only other cartoons that reserve their technicolor for their animals and clothes (and sometimes hair), but real life skin color as well. They probably had their skin color for the toys, as it was made for the toys to begin with, but still.
2.5 oh god luna looks awful.
