Easy, an in-universe explanation is that the whole regeneration limit was more of a timelord law rather than a bilogical restriction. Since they’re gone, The Doctor can regenerate many times he wants to.

A behind the scenes explanation, however, is that the BBC don’t want their flagship program sinking after just 8 years (Look at how the Doctor Who series has gone on for before it’s cancellation in 1989, that’s a fucking long time!)

@Nightjack I actually just got into B5 in the past year, thru my uncle, and as with MLPFIM it didn’t take long at all for me to be as voracious a fan as those who watched it since 1993. I consider myself the B5 equivalent of a Brony, lol.

And here’s the best part. What inspired my uncle to introduce me to the show? My praise of Deep Space 9 as Star Trek’s best outing. I haven’t said that much since. XD

I mean I haven’t seen any Babylon 5 relater material, like the show or looked up and info on it, like I have with other things I’m a fan of, I have even gotten Samurai Pizza Cats videos on a portable hard drive and watched in just last year twice but that hasn’t been on TV at all after 92, Babylon 5 ran to 98 and haven’t seen it sense then.

I feel Anthony Aniley had the role for too long though. While The Daleks are his greatest for, the Doctor-Master rivalry is much more personal, and the characters need to be foils for each other. Delgado and Pertwee synchronized phenomenally, as did Simm and Tennenant. Baker and the two guys who played Crispy!Master were okay, while Anthony and Davidson were a bit better, though not on par with the first two I mentioned. They keep him on too long however, as Colin and Sylvester should have each had a different Master to foil their Doctor’s to.

@TrickQuestion It also helps that the Master got ALL of the good actors for his part, with Roger Delgado and a monstrously underutilized Derek Jacobi. So his lesser competence is bolstered by superior acting. XD

@Nightjack I am, at the moment, responsible for the only 2 Babylon 5 posts on this site. That this is the case is a tragedy only rivaled by the existence of Legend of the Rangers. XP

Dangerous because he his more competent, certainly, but I always figured as far as malevolence goes, The Master is more evil then The Valeyard. The Valeyard is all of The Doctor’s evil, but even though The Doctor has some pent up darkness, The Valeyard still wouldn’t be a complete being. The Master is also %100 evil, but that’s all natural.

What we would need is a second Valeyard made of the Master’s repressed good. Then the two could battle it out!

Although I will posit this, it doesn’t TRULY count unless he tangles with multiple generations. With the 7th Doctor being an ABSOLUTE REQUIREMENT. XD

@TrickQuestion I was thinking “regeneration in the process of something morally dubious”, but that also works. :D

In truth -and this is a bit blasphemous, yes -I think that the Valeyard is a much more dangerous foe than the Master. The Master is cunning and knowledgeable, for sure, but he only knows so much about the Doctor and could be caught off guard by his own ego. The Valeyard knew all of the Doctor’s tricks, and very nearly had him twice as a result. The only problem is they created this potentially amazing villain during one of the low points of the franchise and he was criminally underutilized.

@Nightjack I’m always happy with more Doctor Who. In truth, I’ll only be 100% a happy clam if there’s a Bester vs the Doctor special, but the odds of that are about the same as finding a real life Twilight Sparkle renting out her magical support services in a gold Rolls Royce, so I learn to cope. The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

In the new series, the Doctor has progressively been getting darker (just look at the episode that premiered yesterday) and I’m betting at either twelve or thirteen, he’s going to get desperate, start to think about all the innocents who will die if he dies permenentaly and can’t be around to save them. He also dosen’t wan’t to end up like The Master, whose attempts to cheat death cost an innocent man his body and had him look like Palpatine’s ugly cousin for awhile. He’ll do something desperate, and justify it by saying any damage he causes saving himself will be made up for by all the people he’ll save by living.

As a result of whatever horrible thing he must do to gain regeneration with the other Time Lords gone, the Valeyard is created.

The Valeyard’s place in the line was so vague that then if you throw out the only part of ontinuity other then the name ‘Valeyard’ and that he’s evil then why even make it the Valeyard at all.

@Nightjack Aha, but that’s the best part of all! Remember, the Valeyard is the result of all of the Doctor’s pent up evil tendencies spilling forth, so odds are he has a lot of 10’s desperation to survive, and as such would force his next regeneration to look similar to a form allowing that desperation to have a plausible shape.

It’s all symbolic and shiz. XD

I mean for it to be “between the Doctor’s twelfth and final” it has to be at lest 13, and continuity don’t even have to play into it, there is no set number for how many are after 12, so we have a long time for it to even happen

@TrickQuestion Exactly! She’d sell them all down the river in a heartbeat for more regenerations or straight up immortality, although knowing the Valeyard she probably has a backup plan for Discord’s inevitable betrayal. XD
