The lights are definitely Zonda, but the overall shape of the car and the big side vents make me think more of a Lamborghini. Maybe a Gallardo?

And “Camino” is Spanish for “road,” so its whole name is just “The Road.” Seems kind of backwards if you think about it.

Speaking of Car/Truck/Ute things, look what’s going into (limited) production in 2018:

While I’d personally prefer the old Checker Marathon sedan, a new 1950s style ute is awesome.

Yeah, that’s just a render, I don’t think they’ve actually built any yet. The article I saw said that they’ll be powered by GM LS-Series V-8s or an optional diesel.

Oh, and they’re also making a 6-door:

Not 100% sure on the target audience for this one, but it’s certainly unique.

A shuttle for vintage hotels perhaps, or a limo for people with old school taste?

The Checker taxi is a hugely iconic car. I’m a little surprised they don’t try to make an updated version of the sedan instead of these ute and limo variants.

I’m surprised by that too. Given that they’re legally limited to 500 a year, they’re basically looking at a kit car scale market. Considering that, I’d have prioritized the sedan (iconic), then the wagon (semi-iconic and practical), and then the ute (not iconic at all, but people will want one). And then maybe the limo; I’m sure you could sell some to businesses, but I can’t imagine there would be many people who would want a 6-door for a personal vehicle.

The only thing I can guess is that the Checker company also restores and resells the old ones, which must be easier/cheaper than building new sedans.

@SeraphimDawn
The demand is people who want semi-luxury cars with Toyota reliability. They’re not particularly interesting cars, but they are pretty good at what they’re meant for. I know I see them around reasonably often, but I’m not sure exactly how often. They kind of blend into the background.

@RainbowDash69
Assuming it’s built like the old ones, it ought to be a fairly heavy duty vehicle (they had to survive being NYC cabs, after all). An old manual I found online says that the Checker is “by design, especially well suited to towing a heavy trailer.” So, basically, no rated towing capacity, just “yeah, you’re good.”

What happened to large spacious sedans like the Checker that were capable of towing? For that matter, can you tow with modern cars? I’m sure the owner’s manual says not to and it may be illegal in some places, but do you think it would be mechanically possible to tow a light trailer with an average car today?

My guess is that two things happened: first, as trucks and SUVs became more popular, the people who wanted to tow went with those. Second, car design used to be more truck-like (body-on-frame, solid axles, leaf spring rear suspension), but they’ve moved away from that, trading towing /load capacity for better handling.

That being said, you can absolutely tow with a modern car:

And off the top of my head, I think the V-8 powered LX-platform cars are rated for 2,000 pounds, and you can even order them from the factory with a trailer hitch and wiring.

Countries outside the US tow big things with small cars all the time, but their tow ratings are calculated differently. If I’m reading this correctly, our tow ratings are designed such that you will be absolutely safe if you adhere to them, but, for the same car, UK/EU weight ratings are higher with a smaller margin for error. So anything can tow, you just have to be careful in some cases and generally apply common sense.
