It is ill advised to afflict pain to oneself during a heightened arousal state like an anxiety attack as it can be a gateway to further self harm.

How hard can it be for people to not be offended?

If I can be not offended just by telling myself it’s not offensive. So should others.

But, at any rate, it is still ill advised. You can start to associate pain with anxiety reduction. Factor in diminishing returns, and you start to need stronger pain stimulus to reduce the anxiety, which in turn causes more anxiety, which necessitates more pain, etc, etc.

Self distraction is a more viable alternative yes.
 
Hobbies work wonders on such things. And if you believe in the catharsis model, redirecting negative emotions into safer areas can also help.

Catharsis in the form of physical exercise gives you exersize and also serves as a distraction.

Well, actually, there are several exploratory studies testing the effects of pot and LSD on depression and anxiety, the results seem promising.
 
The secret to curing depression might rest in LSD, a Pink Floyd album, and a colorful ceiling.

People associate marijuana with the high that you recieve when it is used. It can be bred to give less of a high and more benefits.

The governments vendetta against weed is driven by economic interests. The US criminal justice system, propped up and lobbied from the For-Profit prison system, uses the drug war as a major money maker. Prisons make money, government collects fines/court costs/ cops keep their jobs, and the politicians get bankrolled. Everyone is happy except the poor mooks in jail and the public at large.

I hear cannabis plant can be used to make paper, clothing, food, butter, and even construction materials.  
Overall a very versatile plant.  
Could there also have been others within those industries that make said goods wanting to protect their interests?

The logging and paper industry has lobbied against pot in the past, but I’m not sure to what extent.
 
Their influence wouldn’t been nearly as powerful as the for-profit prison system and the police force.
