It really does help when you're visiting. Like, sure, hiragana and katakana will get you by for the most part, but it's hard to read those walls of kana when flying by a sign on the train. Once you get into recognizing kanji though, you'll always know where you are just from the license plates and reading trainstop signs becomes trivial.

I never thought I'd have a reason to learn kanji, until I actually started trying to use it. They really do make some stuff a lot easier.

But, all of this is horrifically off topic, so … meh.

okay last reply on this off topic. promise. Yeah I know kanji to be really super helpful, because like you said it could be harder and at times cumbersome to see texts of hiragana. Recognizing kanji even if you don't know what it says, helps significantly. Practically to me, it's like reading pictures and symbols. I'm currently aiming to learn about 150 most common words in anime (and their kanji) just so I could FINALLY enjoy hentai without relying on godawful machine translations.

Only kanji I know are void and heaven. The heaven one seconds as the number 10? I have a bowl with the void symbol on it.

It would be good for my super villian aesthetic to learn more. Japanese is intimidating and antisocial people have an easier time learning intimidating things. I keep saying I'm going to pick up some kanji from videogames but I need a more direct approach.
