Half the time during the big action set pieces in Dev Patel and Jordan Peele’s MONKEY MAN I kept pointing at the big screen and kept yelling “That’s THE RAID! THE RAID!!!”

I KNEW it was The Raid!

Most ppl be comparing it to John Wick (even namedropped in the film) but the tone, the choreo, the gritty, raw splatterhouse martial arts ballet of punches, kicks, throws and props not nailed to the table used as a makeshift weapon is so reminiscent of The Raid.

I still can’t comprehend how The Raid kept flying above mainstream action fans’s heads despite it being literally the one movie that put a stop to the godawful jumpcut shaky cam and helped shape action sequences of the last decade from Cap America Winter Soldier to Arrow to Daredevil to John Effing Wick.

We’re still living in a Post-The-Raid era of martial arts action movies until something else comes along, something groundbreaking.

That said, I love Monkey Man.

Giant Sci-fi Ships being high in number are stupid:

Cruisers and Destroyers are kind of the same except that one is generally for command and communications while the other is for direct action.

Generally they’re around the same size nowadays in real life but for some reason in sci-fi it’s not uncommon for one to outsize the other by a ridiculous amount.

As like a wolf compared to a rhino sized different and stuff…

Modern cruisers and destroyers are very similar primarily because they use missles as their primary armament along with a single general purpose gun.

If you go to the first and Second World War however, there is a very notable difference in size and weaponry between them. Which kind of fits since most sci-fi ship battles use gun based combat.

Realistically, a space faring warship would be more like a submarine.

There actually is a difference in overall tonnage and displacement, with cruisers being on the heavier end, destroyers in the middle, and frigates (aside from heavy frigates) on the lighter end.

And that tonnage is important.

Cruisers are “independent”, able to run operations on their own or in a small task force. They are more heavily armored and often have more defensive options like point defenses and electronic warfare packages.

Destroyers and Frigates are fleet bound, fulfilling specific roles in the fleet. Destroyers, as their name implies are often for offensive action (anti-sub is a common one these days) and frigates defensive and escort actions.

Then you have fun combos like battle cruisers (which most modern navies don’t run)

Other fun fact, most modern navies also do not run cruisers, with America being the only navy that has a substantial number with the Ticonderoga-class.

Most folks see Jedi as “Space Wizards” but honestly, they’re more like Spiritual Monks:

i also suppose if we are going with dnd-esque terms, something like paladins or clerics is probably the best description for the jedi. tho sith are indeed wizards (if evil wizards)

It’s the severed head of the Project X “Deadpool” from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, returning as “Headpool”
