Cartoon/Western Animation General

My father grew up with those Hannah Barberra characters. They meant a lot to him, Just like Courage, Johnny bravo and the ed’s meant a lot to me.
 
Turning these characters into fundamentally different people just to tick the usual corporate mandated boxes in hope of attracting an audience more interested in fortnite and YouTube cringe is an exercise in futility and disrespectful. But who cares? It’s just a bunch of 50-60 year old characters nobody under 50 cares about anymore being vandalised for kids today to pass wind at and be forgotten. And when it does fail, who’ll get blamed? The boomers they went out of their way to mock or ignore anyway.
 
It’s all so cyclical and tiresome, like clockwork.

Who’s gonna talk like Curly, when Curly isn’t here? Well, apparently no one. My opinion on it will always be lazy. It also just makes me think the creators had a different show in mind and characters and slapped a skin of a character onto it. Even if it was done in a way that I live or think is interesting, I want to keep that a principal. It takes more away then it adds, sometimes when they just change characteristic for no real reason at all. On the topic of Gender-swapping feels more like instead of adding a Smurfette, they just turned the character into Smurfette.
 
No one wouldn’t mind newer characters be added to a show if they don’t overshadow the original, like how Scrappy just seem annoying and overly smart. I can think a few shows like Johnny Quest and SWAT cats that added newer characters that didn’t feel shoe-horned or written lazy. Smirf add new smirfs… Don’t remember the Snorks did or not.
 
Looking at the trailer, it looks pretty average, I don’t think it’d leave an impression. Just another run-of-the-mill comedy show that there’s plenty of those. so I’m really not gonna lose sleep over it. I have more important things to worry about like my cat’s health condition or where I put the medication.
 
Although, thinking of Hana-Barbra IPs… I wouldn’t mind a Fang Face as a more battling the supernatural and other Nightstalkers.

I bet Tartakovsky could make either of those pretty cool. Man, I even remember shows like Don Cayote or Herculoids. People remember these shows for a reason.

When you think about it, if the characters didn’t get swapped the only non-human female characters that appear in Jellystone Season 1 are Cindy Bear, Maw Rugg & Floral Rugg from The Hillbilly Bears, and Kitty Jo from Cattanooga Cats. That’s 3 bear characters. So the swaps make more sense to round the cast out and make them more interesting.

Hard to say what my fave is. But I do remember enjoying Hong-Kong Phooey and Jabberjaw at some point in the past.
 
I think the weirdest change for me in regards to Jellystone! is making Jonny and Hadji a married couple in the series since they were brothers (Benton adopted Hadji into the Quest family) in the old series. But they don’t really do much except appear in a few scenes, and again I can just chalk that up to Jellystone being an AU.

Thinking about it. One thing I always hated was Hong-Kong Phooey, with Scatman Crother’s as a cool voiced character was an incompetent dipshit! Him being a trained Martial artist, it was either he bumbles it and her cat catches the bad guys or they just give up because they just know the name. I guess “Dats de joke” but I hated that! I wanted to see him kick ass! The voice of Jazz coming out a boob… I can’t, it hurts…
 
If they made another version, I’d love to see him more as good fighter and he could still be goofy like getting stuck in file cabinet and such, but I wouldn’t want to see like a moron.

I get being passionate about these characters and having attachments to them, but when you have very obscure characters like these, you gotta have them evolve/or reinvent them otherwise their original shtick isn’t going to work. Did you get upset when Harvey Birdman did their takes on certain characters, or Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, or Sealab 2021?
 
If you want to talk to talk about failure in modernizing cartoons, and cringe go see Yo Yogi!. That show nearly single-handedly killed Saturday Morning Cartoons and kept Yogi from doing anything until that live-action film in 2010. Also, William Hanna hated Yogi’s redesign so much he thought he looked like a whoremonger.
 

 
Jellystone! is doing a lot more for the Hanna-Barbera franchise than that did and it’s made by folks who love those cartoons.

Now that you brought it up it’d be interesting if Hong-Kong Phooey and El Kabong teamed up in an episode. Having the former be less of a bumbling idiot in future episodes of Jellystone could happen. Who knows?

I found out there was a Wacky Races special in 2017 where they did pretty much make Hong Kong Phooey a more skilled character.

This isnt “evolving” or “re-inventing” them. Growing a snatch doesn’t elevate you up the evolutionary ladder or make you an interesting character.
 
Harvey Birdman just got a new job and genre. They didn’t turn him into Jamal or Hailey Birdman. It added to him, It didn’t turn him into something else.
 
All this is, Is uncreative Hacks wanting to use familiar properties rather than create new ones of their own, And Twisting or altering them in order to meet their corporate mandated gender diversity quota. If you wanted more diversity? Make Snagglepuss gay. That guys got Twink written all over him and its not like he was known for being a Poonhound back in the day. Create new female characters. Don’t turn Hucklberry into Hildaberry and pretend they’re the same person or that it in anyway respects the original creators characters or intent.
 
 
Fans of the originals won’t care. New kids won’t notice. This show will be another failed attempt at rejuvenating a property that should stay dead.

I always hated Inspector Gadget for the same reason. He was so fucking boring because he was a collosal moron who had to be bailed out by his niece.
 
Let the main Character do something damnit. Or at least let him in on the joke so he can thank his niece and grow as a person.

Gadget was competent if someone he cared about was in danger, but it’s a comedy not an action comedy, the story doesn’t work if he’s competent,

It’s just that it was the same joke again and again ad nauseam. Title character with a shitload of awesome gadgets and weapons spends the whole episode chasing red herrings and bumblefucking his way into taking credit for his niece’s work. He never does anything awesome or heroic and watching him feels like a waste of time. Would it have killed the writers to add some variety to their scripts? Let Gadget have some (Intentional) wins occasionally? Inspector Gadget himself was just another giant red herring! The show shoulda been called Penny and Brain because Gadget was just (bad) comedy relief.

I guess Gadget and Hong Kong phoohey just fail in living up to the potential coolness of their premise is all.
 
Kung fu dog who never wins a fight and Robo detective who never solves a crime because every episode has to tell the same joke.
 
Hero appears cool but is actually a clutz who only survived through sheer luck and slapstick.

Yeah, Gadget seemed like a goober most of the time. It was Penny and Brain who solved everything while like you said Bumblefucking around. I remember an episode where he got lost in the snow and Penny discovers a tribe of Viking with power Goat’s milk.
 
I can imagine an anime based off Inspector Gadget where he’s detective that was fatally injured by means of a hit man and was given cybernetic enhancements to save his life to find the culprit and bring him to justice along with his genetically enhanced dog Brain and niece Penny whose parents were killed by the same big bad; Dr. Claw.  
The PowerPuff Girls Z show was pretty good.

A lot of the first wave of Adult Swim cartoons were pretty much like that. Going off the rails in nonsensical ways. While I do like Harvey Birdman, I can understand what you’re coming from. The Hanna-Barbera characters were more used as punchlines based on their existences. I mean, they could have had a reference to Peter Potamus’s series at one point but the only thing we got from that was we saw his flying boat in a parking lot at one point.
 
Cool. Maybe we’ll see Hong Kong Phooey in Jellystone! sometime.

Yeah. A lot of animation experts know this and I’m sure there’s going to be that one old fart who acts like the original incarnations are holy and untouchable but I bet they’re just in denial.

I agree. There’s not really much lost from the genderswapping as long as the original cartoons and characters are preserved.  
To me, I think the weirdest change was turning Jabberjaw into a girl. Can’t wait for someone to say that Jabberjaw is their waifu. XD

We need more stupid in the world. Drawn Together fills a void no other show is willing to fill. With bodily fluid and pooped on pizzas.

Drawn Together is also a chance for voice actors to just cut loose and do whatever, sing a song about gay sex, making out with a black girl for the first time, or a Pokemon ripoff committing acts of violence for the amusement of children.  
Also I just want Tara Strong and Cree Summer together in a show again.
