Most unicorns aren’t all that powerful, but some spells seem to be pretty easy. Rarity was able to improvise a weather spell without warning or practice, so groups of unicorns can fight back against the big weapon of the pegasi.
 
More importantly, some unicorns have access to a very extreme magic. While Twilight’s abilities as a powerful generalist are extremely rare, there unicorns with a magic like Shining Armor’s city shielding spell. Just one unicorns with a power like that is a complete game changer. A few unicorns, each with a different strong spell, would be a nightmare to face.
 
Hell, Sombra was able to rule the Crystal Empire with an iron hoof through the power of his crystal control magic. One unicorn. One spell.
 
One spell that Celestia and Twilight know, but Cadance likely does not… Interesting.

I’ve always thought that unicorns were one trick ponies, with a few exceptions. But they can have some damn good tricks.

Well, they have one big trick. Since it’s connected to their special talent in some way, it seems to be either the kind of magic that they are literally talented at, or the most interested in. They can learn other kinds of magic, it’s just that they aren’t as good at it, or aren’t as interested, so they just don’t put forth the effort. Stuff like levitation and the flashlight spell seems to be easy enough and useful enough for everyone to pick up.
 
But the tricks… At the low end, Rarity can find jewels, which gives her easy access to vast wealth, and at the high end, Shining Armor can make a shield that can cover an entire city.
 
Even assuming that there are only a handful of unicorns with tricks as powerful as Shining Armor’s shield at any one time, that still gives them a vast advantage over the other races.

I always thought Sombra was his era’s version of Twilight Sparkle. I.E. capable of using many spells.

Sombra was either one of those Classical Unicorns or a foreign strain. Curved horns are unusual for Equestrian unicorns. It was never said that he was Equestrian.

Except that He Isn’t. Star Swirl Is more like his era version of twilight. Sombra may know alot of spells, but not as much as Twilight and most of them are crystal related. He may be ten steps ahead of alicorn twilight but power doesnt equal how much spells he knows.

I thought he was the first pony to ever use dark magic, or at least the only one to ever expand on its use.

All alicorns began as unicorns, but what separates them out as candidates for princesship is an inherent, unconscious talent for dark magic. Becoming an alicorn provides an enormous an enormous boost to a ponies capacity for light magic, which hopefully balances them out a bit a gets them to avoid doing stuff like necromancy. This is why Celestia uplifted Twilight and Cadance, she feared what they would do if the only way to solve a problem was to throw as much magical power at it as possible and tap into the darkness.
 
Branching from this, if Twilight wasn’t made a princess she would eventually have found that her true talents lay in necromancy.

Nobody ever gives Necromancy the respect it deserves.
 
Case in point, Celestia has banned it, even though nopony was trying to do it and it lies beyond the reach of regular unicorn magic.  
She has a phobia of the undead.

He was certainly very smart, but I don’t know if he could cast loads of spells the way that Twilight can. We only saw him use that crystal control spell, after all.

I alway figured that he was the unicorn equivalent of the bat ponies. Classical unicorns have lion tails and cloven hooves, along with a beard, all things that Sombra lacked.

HeadCanon: Star Swirl the Bearded was a classical unicorn, complete with a goat’s beard.
 
The Crystal Heart Spell fits very poorly into the cartoon. Until it gets referenced in the series proper, I’ll take anything in it with a grain of salt.

I have a question… why is necromancy automatically the evilest magic? Wouldn’t communing with demonic powers be worse? I think so.

It varies from setting to setting honestly, and it all depends on what it actually does.
 
For instance in D&D it really isn’t all that evil itself, just favored by evil people for offensive purposes. A lot of people forget that in D&D healing magic is technically necromancy (at least it was in 3rd edition).
 
In general it is considered evil because of the various societal taboos against the desecration of the dead, and those come from our own primal fear of dead things.
 
Lets face it someone with an army of the undead doing their bidding is probably not up to anything good, although the idea of someone raising a bunch of zombies to make their charity work more efficient is hilarious.
 
In my headcanon necromancy is banned because its sort of regarded as gateway black magic. Yes technically it doesn’t matter that you’re just using corpses to do your house work, but it too easily leads to stuff like making pacts with demons and maniacal laughter.
