Hoo boy, I’ve seen some act that way too. Fluttershy fans used to get stereotype’d & exaggerated as that, (because a few got bent over Gilda yelling at her, and making her cry in the first season) but I’ve seen way more act much worse over other characters, especially Spike, I hate to say, sense I’m quite fond of him too.
Like I see fellow Spike fans get angry anytime he’s clumsy, or has something humorous happen ro him. One or two fans were so angry about tnat kinda thing he drew Spike torturing the show’s writers/producer’s ponysonas (Like Meghan McCarthy) and such. Which is kinda disturbing some put the well being of a fictional character over real people. (And things like this are what give fandoms a bad rap.)
That said, on another subject, I tire of fans whom accuse the show staff of “hating” their favorite character constantly, and for ridiculous reasons. (It reminds me of the crazy Sonic fans whom accuse comic writer Ian Flynn of hating every character they like.)
People don’t understand good writing if they want nothing bad to ever happen.
Meanwhile, speaking as a Spike-fan, I actually enjoy his cute clumsy or silly moments. Heck, I wasn’t even bothered by his controversial episodes like “Spike at your Service.” (I admit he was a li’l Flanderized in that, but there were moments he wasn’t a complete buffoon, like how he didn’t fall for the fake Timberwolf at all, and I loved his deadpan reaction to it.)
