Very well then, in tandem with the universe, he could be toned down a bit, but enough to show a distinction within the Royal Guard that he is a fearsome Pegasus and not to be messed with. Even his siblings did not recognise him at first glance, only by appearance.

damn, that’s harsh. who knows? this could lead to a life lesson never seen before on the show. But knowing how “infant” the show is and after seeing Shining Armor and almost every single guard not over reacting with the “law enforcement” i think flash could be serious but not an oppressor (unless he was part of the NCR…) the Royal Guard as a whole is not oppressing at all, they’re there to protect and serve, not to involve laws forcing everyone to obey it. But your story? man it sure is harsh

The second one is mostly my basis of stories that I write with Flash in it, Family. Father and Mother were proud members of the Royal Guard (father is the solider, and mother is the medic) that raised a well-disciplined family of three. Father lost his life during the last war, weeks after the third foal was born. The mother was so heart broken that she fell ill and died. This made him very bitter and opposed the Royal Guard and the Monarchy, with the difficulty of taking care of his brother and sister with what they had left.
 
That’s when Shining Armor approached him and said that his brave and courageous superior had sacrificed his life to save him: His Father. He also stated that the father also kept a message for him talking about the real reasons why he fought for Equestria. As a debt as well as an opportunity, Shining wanted Flash to join the Royal Guard and fight with him. Though still bitter over the loss, Flash agreed to join in order to help provide for his siblings and no sooner did he have high respect for the Unicorn and the two became strong allies and friends.
 
Over the time, Shining Armor became Captain of the Royal Guard, and Flash worked and trained hard in order to keep up. His devotion was not overlooked as he was commended for his duty and promoted to the Captain’s Lieutenant (or a High-ranking officer). However, he forgot the reasons why he actually joined the Royal Guard and his priorities began to shift from family to monarchy, as well as his emotions from loving protection to law enforcement. The scales had finally tipped when he was transferred to the Crystal Empire with Shining and Cadence, leaving his siblings behind.
 
But as Shining was becoming a Prince, he wanted Flash to be the successor of the Royal Guard. His trial? To return to Ponyville and become temporary retainer to the Princess of Magic and her friends. That’s until he realises how different things would be when dealing with the mares, as well as facing his siblings that has grown in his absence, a stallion who was sure with his orders and duty had never became so helpless and lost with so many questions to answer on what he had missed from his family.

i have some ideas for the background
 
1- he’s an former gangster who was arrested and (somehow) Shining saw potential on him, so he trained him to fight on the right side. So with that, flash earned his redemption and discovered the right side to fight, to become someone better and help people. which would lead to him to face his old gang members in the future, showing to them that he had become better than a criminal
 
2- he’s doing that because of his family. Maybe he has a younger brother/sister that sees him as the only father figure cuz his real father had died before he/she had born. With that, he wants to protect him/her by all means, that’s why he became a royal guard, to protect and serve, but especially because of the love he has for his family
 
to be honest, i dont know which one is the best of these two

Yeah, I also like your ideas on Flash too on what type of aspect he can have. A crossbow would definitely suit him as I hear more about it!

besides, so far we didn’t see a guard with a crossbow, he would be the first one and also, he would be a part of a sniper group, kinda like “First Recon” from Fallout New Vegas, they can fight melee but their main feature as snipers is ranged, so his favorite and main weapon could be a semi-automatic crossbow with professional scope.
 
and your ideas as for “being in the royal guard” are great. i just dont have much ideas as for the backstory or family, brother, sister idk

My thought is that he’d at least have some combat knowledge of all weapons, but he definitely would have some favourite weapons. And yes, his seriousness definitely stays when not on duty. I thought he’d be rather awkward in socialising (Sosuke Sagara level), but a soldier does have to be charismatic, especially if he wants to climb the ranks!
 
As for being in the Royal Guard, he could have a backstory on why he joined. Family legacy, high respect and trust in Shining Armor, the ideas are endless. Of course, it could also adhere to his skills like you said

we dont see much serious characters in the show, he should be serious as a dedicated royal guard, but also charismatic when he’s not on duty, but still a little serious. also, he should have a reason to be in the royal guard, a diferent reason, not strength but maybe agility or perception, whitch would make him great with a crossbow

But can she protect it from his spankings? That tushie is simply begging for a few good smacks.

I thought of making him a mix of a military klutz like Sosuke Sagara and a completely devoted soldier where nothing matters but his job. Emotion-wise, he’s strict and scary, annoying with reminders, but a very merciful and sympathetic/empathetic soldier. That being said, his path can involve adjusting from a stalwart lieutenant to Shining, into a mental conflict on whom to serve: Captain, Princess, Country, Family, etc, etc, etc.

gotta agree. y’know, if they came up to me saying “you have one day to make him a better character” i would start by making him more serious, kinda like Zero (megaman x) and a tiiiiiny bit of sasuke. im not saying he should have an older brother who he wants to kill for vengeance thought, it’s just how his serious side should be
