Many pointed out that it looks like a popping bubble. I wrote a fic about it, theorizing what his special talent could be based on that:

Ponies have names. Not first names, not last names, not family names, just names. The only family that shares a name is Apple Bloom and Applejack, and most of their cousins. But Granny Smith and Big Mac break that rule.
Did this need explaining? This is season 1 knowledge.

Derpy’s in show name is now Muffins or something. And Derpy was only called Derpy, never Derpy Hooves. He doesn’t need the hooves. Besides, ponies don’t have last names.

Shining Armor and Zypher Breeze would like a word with you.
Both names also nicely reflect his cutie mark that looks like something has popped or burst.
The only problem I have with those two names is that they don’t have “Hooves” in it, so they don’t really reflect a blood relationship with Derpy.

I’ve seen lots of people calling him Crackle Pop.
I like the name Buffer lets make it canon.
Then look for the pic of him and Derpy freaking out to put that suggestion up.
I nominate “Bubble Pop” or “Buffer” as his name.

That’s pretty clever. I’d hate to stereotype him into a derby racer though. He could have other interests.
