Also, note that the one time Sunburst actually did powerful magic of his own was when Starlight was in danger. This is actually a plot point in a fanfic I’m working on.
They so need to fill in Starlight’s backstory because going from her losing Sunburst to the village is a bit of a timeskip. With a character as potentially deep as Starlight, you need to have a long and established backstory so that the audience can potentially relate to and sympathise with. Because if they leave it as is, she is going to have a lot of haters. Which is understandable because her backstory, as it is currently portrayed, is so weak and makes her look like a massive mare-foal.
If they patch in, bit by bit, Starlight and Sunburst’s backstories as the series goes on, then the audience will get to sympathise with her better and will like her better. Also I have to ask, if Sunburst and Starlight are of a similar age to the Mane 6, wouldn’t Sunburst be attending PSCGU at the same time as Twilight?
It’s part of why the brevity of Starlight’s backstory in the S5 Finale frustrates me so much; it would have been really easy to toss in something like “I had such a crush on him, and having my heart broken like that ruined my whole outlook on life so badly that it affected every decision I made after it”. I think they made a pretty good start at patching it in The Crystalling in a way that made sense for the characters, but they really needed to follow up on it at some point.

Its a good idea, both could become so attached to each other that they, unconsciously afraid of leaving each other. Then at the moment they were separated, it triggered similar reactions in both of them.
Sunburst became angry at himself for not being able to be the powerful wizard that Starlight thought he would be. Starlight became angry over the fact an Cutie Mark had shattered her whole life. Sunburst later hated himself for ever leaving Starlight. Starlight then hated all Cutie Marks and what they represented. Then Sunburst ended up suffering as a failure and outcast in his eyes and then secluded himself in the Crystal Empire. Starlight then suffered internally by removing what made ponies unique and special, detached herself from everypony else in the vain hope of never being hurt again.
Wait a minute….. oh now I see. To sum up Sunburst’s and Starlight’s whole lives:
Now I see what you did there MLP….. I see it.
That could work in both directions, actually; if Sunburst was crushin’ on Starlight, he would have had even more motivation not to let her find out he was struggling at PCSGU.
