Frankly Masami Obari could draw ponies better than Fosgitt can, and look at his artwork:

Kinda see what I mean? Obari’s infamous for drawing terrible character designs…

Yeah, there was drama over the old griffon too. Forgot his name. Could be also comic editors not having access to the original designs. So it might not even be entirely Fosgit’s fault.

Is it bad I kinda liked the chubby Greta better? lol

the biggest complaint that i can recall other than the on-model one was greta being different from the one in the show.

did they ever clarify if that’s a different greta or same character but miscommunication issues resulted in a different design

Yeah, I’ve seen fanartists with much more exaggerated, or outlandish styles who get nothing, but praise. If Fosgit was a fanartist, nobody would complain about his art. I guess everyone wants the comics to just look only one way, or like they were done by one artist.

Even in terms of official artists, I honestly prefer Fosgit over Garbowska, Tony Fleecs, Katie, and some of the “Micro” MLP comic artists. (But they still have cute/good art too sometimes, don’t get me wrong.)
Plus, it’s nice to have some of the official comic artists who doesn’t emulate the show/Faust style.
A common complaint tends to be he’s not always “on-model,” but to quote John K. (creator of “Ren & Stimpy”) staying on-model is for commies, I say. lol

@Beau Skunky
that something that bugs me.

how come his art gets hit for not “looking like the actual characters” but when other artists draw official characters in their own style, almost no one uses that particular criticism?

the only thing that separates them is one if official, the others are not (fan artists).

Yeah, we can’t have a single image of his here now without people trying to start drama, or going, “Ew Fosgit!” constantly now. I understand his style isn’t everyone’s appeal, and he’s not always perfect, but it’s getting annoying. Even people who like his stuff are getting afraid to compliment them now.

Also, seriously stuff like this is effing adorable.

Precisely. I’ve always considred his stuff to be really cute, no clue why people have made as big a stink as they have.

To be fair, when was said character refered to as “Gruff?”
Also, I kinda liked the chubby Greta design, (probably the only one who does) but she might’ve been meant to be a different character, for all we know from looking at the differing designs, or they accidently gave her the wrong name. I don’t know.
Plus even the show Gretta was a pretty minor character, so it’s possible the comic makers might’ve not known she existed when making a different Gretta. (These are just speculation, so don’t quote me on any of this.)

So it’s probably not even entirely Jay’s fault for that for all we know, and it might’ve been confusion on part of the editors, who are more-so in charge of the comic then the artists are. Comic artists, especially those on licensed comics aren’t just allowed to draw whatever they want, they have to have some direction, people forget.
