Description

Way too big for ordinary ponies to wear, even too big for Big Mac. What type of creature would these things even fit.

Well, they do actually call ‘em “horseshoes”; seems to me that it’s yet another in-universe holdover from a time when there were still Horses separate and distinct from Ponies. My headcanon is that Horses are to Ponies as cavemen/Neanderthal are to Humans: an earlier version of the type and possible genetic forebear that’s long since gone extinct, but survives in the collective memory as common aphorisms and expressions.

For the same reason ponies’ boots have an area for where toes would go. While there are better alternatives the stereotypical horseshoe is iconic and instantly recognisable.

Well, we know ponies paint their hooves to match their coats (Most of them. Apparently it’s a fashion among some stallions to leave their fetlocks unshorn and paint their hooves to match their mane instead.) So I expect ponies also paint their horseshoes to match their chosen hoof-color.
