Plot reasons, I guess.
this would make more sense if the air pirates weren’t then beaten by a whole squad of FIVE air pirates, 5 ponies without a military background or notable magical powers and 1 catbirdhorse.
Like, seriously, how the hell is the entire population of canterlot (Filled with what’s implied to be a massive influx of ponies from around equestria to boot) WEAKER in a fight than the mane six plus parrots?
Ponyville is right next to Canterlot and doesn’t even have a standing militia, it’s an easy target.
If I was looking for Twilight it would also be the first place on my list.
We got a shot showing Ponyville in flames after the Open Up Your Eyes song. So it wasn’t just Canterlot effected.
Well he’s not interested in conquest, just loot. He did the same to those cat people, smash their capital, grab all the valuables in the palace, job done.
He has very little reason to go after Cloudsdale (really hard to attack, more or less the center of Equestria’s martial tradition, not much of value) or the Crystal Empire (the only thing of value there would be the Crystal Heart, and he wouldn’t be able to use it). On the other hand, once he’s got Canterlot locked down he’s fairly safe from attack himself, Canterlot’s really only vulnerable to attack from the air, and he has a whole fleet of airships ready for any pegasi assault.
I hope that was the case. Someone should ask the writers at a panel.

I got the impression the Storm King only took Canterlot, and then just fortified there.
Except this is a comic that acknowledges the movie as canon, so they really can’t say seeing as a bunch of Air Pirates were able to steamroll their whole nation in a week… Somehow. Like, that’s the part that always loses me, because no matter how weak sauce Equestrian is at defending themselves, that sheer absurd size of the place should made such a quick conquest a logistical impossibility. I mean, a bunch of Air Pirates were able to corral the population of an entire continent into slavery in a week?
