Well, it’s not that that bothers me.

It’s that someone would suppress something that others find enjoyable because they find it offensive when they could just as easily find it flattering, or at least tolerate it.

I know I shouldn’t care so much - it’s not really the hips or piece of fanart at this point that bother me, though, but more generally the reflection on human nature. I mis-saw my notifications when I got on and thought she’d allowed the edit - seeing a gesture of tolerance and goodwill like that really helps a depressed mind trying to stay out of dark places, gives a lot of faith in humanity. But then I just found out I was mistaken.

I just wish there were a win-win for the people who like it the other way more and the artist, and I just personally don’t understand why there can’t be (though I understand that’s just my limited viewpoint - I mean it as in, “I honestly don’t understand”, not an insulting way). I really wish humans could value goodwill over their pride, but if we can’t even get over our pride enough for a piece of pony fanart to post another picture, then how can I believe in a day when people get over their pride in ethnic, national, political, or whatever identity enough to end strife and conflict?

There’s kind of a frank and personal explanation for why I bothered to write such a long message.

I’m not arguing that rule #1 is bad as it is. After all, I reported my own upload because I respect it and the artists’ desires. I just wish people would care more about lighting others’ days up with a little cute and innocent art than taking offense at an edit.

Whatever the case be, though, they’re a good artist, I’ll look through their tag and see if I can’t find some things to help lift my spirits a little.

‘tis the normal mode of operations for an engineer or scientist. The only difference is an artist may spend a few hours on something, whereas a scientist or engineer put hundreds, sometimes even thousands of hours into their work, only for others to improve on it (one of my math professors had been working on a single proof for over 30 years).

Sure, art isn’t a technical craft with an objective end like those things, but I think it could benefit from the same type of mindset, where instead of getting offended at things like that, you see it as flattering that enough people liked your art enough to spend the time to photoshop it (and art does have the end goal of being “aesthetic”, giving a message, or being a pleasurable pastime, to boot, none of which are hurt by edits).

Obviously if they committed the time and energy to doing art of their own to do something difficult like that, then you’re a good enough artist that people cared to take their time to do something like that instead of just finding other art. Of the ~1.5 million indexes on the site they chose you to put their time and attention towards.

Obviously, you’ve done something very, very right, because it would’ve been darn easy for them to take their time and attention somewhere else.

And it’s not like the two would compete for this index number. There’s certainly room on the site for both.

I only wish I were a popular enough artist and people liked my work enough that they’d take time to do stuff like that.

It’s basically fan-art of fan-art, and more than a few of FiM’s staff have expressed less than kind views on a lot of fan-art. But here we are, regardless.

But art is like science in that it’s something we pass along to make the world a little brighter. If it makes it a little more brighter for some a certain way, then you’re still the one who did that, even if others enhanced it down the line. It’s just now your reach and light have gone even further.

We can’t enjoy well-done art without someone complaining about proportions I guess. :/

I mean, if you want to comment on the proportions in a constructive manner, that’s fine, but going as far as editing someone’s work to “improve it” to me is insulting to the artist and not an acceptable form of criticism unless the artists asks first how they could improve it.

Wow. If there was a poll on replacing the original picture with your edit, I’d sure voted for it.

Now, there’s a rule against uploading edits that would irk the artist (“wouldn’t appreciate”), generally meant for (but not restricted to) things like fetish edits. But edits aren’t banned entirely.

So…

EDIT: And then I immediately realize after uploading that the artist has put themselves on DNP for no edits. Lol, well, that’s probably the first time I’ve reported something I uploaded >.>

Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to ask them directly and wait for a response <.<

Apart from her proportions, the artist or commissioner have chosen an outfit that is really hard to make look wet. That thick white fabric won’t change its shape much, since its thick enough to keep its form when soaked and heavy, and it won’t glisten that much, just because its already bright.
I’ve failed in drawing wet clothes several times before, so I know what I’m talking about
But I bet it feels unforgettable to be completely soaked in such a complex outfit, hehehe

Lol, nice. You follow me on dA, then?

That was so many years ago now… 6. I think 6 years ago?

I use Inkscape to do stuff, now.

@Background Pony #0899
Lol, well, let me be more precise, then.

I am a bit annoyed at how unpopular it is to draw humans in actual, realistic, typical, non-overtly sexualized human proportions. (I can forgive a big head - for the media of a more cartoon style it looks fine)

But at the same time I can’t be, and really am not mad at any particular artist since they can draw whatever they like. Pia-sama can draw whatever they like. Maybe they’ve done it so much they don’t realize they’re doing it at this point (making hips more than twice as wide as stomach) and they need a comment to tell them to check their proportions.

Or maybe it’s intentional. They’re so good at everything else I’d just assumed they’d actively chosen those proportions than did them on accident, but I could be mistaken.

At any rate, maybe it’ll help them, maybe they meant it that way, either way I’m not mad at them for drawing whatever they like.

I’m just kind of annoyed at the trend and this brings it up because it’s extremely well done in every way except that.

So, no I’ll feelings to any artist in particular. It’s just the point of comments to make known to artists comments like this one.

So, that’s what I mean by “I don’t mean to sound angry”. If you’ve ever used the “not to x, but…” expression before you’ve probably had this vague feeling, but there it is concretely laid out.

Addendum; I mean really it’s the same as complaining about massively long legs and tiny bodies on the EQG models, but that’s been standardized by EQG, so there’s really no point in complaining about that.

I did try vectoring a realistic proportioned and colored EQG Twi, though. That was a fun experiment in realistic proportions.
=/

Please tell us your height and your weight, to make us aware of whom are we talking to.
According to your posts, you won’t be ashamed of sharing that data. It’s rather a question of pride than shame.

And here I was gonna ask if you have that photoshopped version available/how good a job photoshopping it was…

Because c’mon, guys. It’s more than twice as wide as her stomach area. It’s like she doesn’t even have kidneys.

It annoys me how often artists like misproportion things for - what - sexual interest? I mean, getting the proportions right in a drawing is a skill. Why would you intentionally mess up? This artist has some really good skill, but like a lot of other really good artists, instead of making stuff that looks right - or looks really believable/well-proportioned, they do stuff like make the hips more than twice as wide as her stomach, and their boobs so big they don’t even fit on her chest.

I mean, they have every right to - I don’t mean to sound angry or mad or anything, it’s just I’d like to see more humans with believable, typical human proportions is all.
