This scene itself kinda symbolizes everything what I think of Starlight: Negligence, lack of responsibility, lack of discipline, power fantasy and everything else.

This is by far the worst episode in the entire show. Starlight got some other episodes like this one in season 7, 8 and even 9, but by the time I watched the season 6 I actually expected an episode where Starlight learns from her mistakes. By the time I was finishing the last seasons last year, I didn’t expect any kind of redemption, so that made the goal of finishing the last seasons surprisingly tolerable.

If the writers of Starlight embrace the idea of redemption just to completely ignore the narrative ambition in the next seasons, then why should I care about a Starlight detail that the writers didn’t care?

She is, it just took a while. At this point, she was still in “Use magic to solve everything” mode, combined with “Oh god if I fail Twilight’s tests that makes me a bad pony.” So she panicked and went straight to “I’ll use magic to make them all do things so we finish our friendship activities on time!”

The rest of the Mane Six were never quite certain just why Twilight had commissioned an anonymous artist for her portrait…but they couldn’t forget the end result.

No matter how hard they tried.
