Yeah. That bothers me about the design on the left too. The exaggerated square jawline, very thin legs, and other human-like qualities just rub me the wrong way as well.
 
I quite like some of the fan interpretations of older spike a whole lot better.

I’ll be honest, I always thought the one on the left looked gross and weird, with the exaggerated abs and all.
 
It’s nice that Spike got the dream body he always wanted without looking too grossly humanoid.

Frankly, if there’s a problem, it’s that he can stand on two legs. With those proportions, he shouldn’t be able to do so (for extended periods, at least).
 
If he sat, say, like Torch, it would be better.

I don’t really care for either design. In fact, as much as I dislike the one on the right, I dislike the one on the left even more. It’s way too human-like for my tastes.

Neither am I. They gave him this childishly small cute face on a large buff humanoid body and it just looks so jarring when put together.
 

 
This is still probably my favorite older Spike designs. The proportions are more balanced, he looks reptilian and dragon-like, but he still looks rather cute.
