Here’s the thing a lot of people don’t realize – just because you’re OP doesn’t make you a Mary Sue. As long as they’re a sense of conflict within the character, something that challenges them internally, then it doesn’t matter what their abilities are.
I mean, you’re the most powerful mage in the entire WORLD, seconded only by Celestia and Luna..And even then probably not for long. Not only that, you can now FLY.
But I guess technicaly you’re not. You’re a well developed character. With known flaws….
How ever seeing has how you have transcended pass us mere mortals, you don’t have many.
Out of the blue? That was her destiny that Celestia guided her whole life up until that point to.
Her friends didn’t just kneel before her. Celestia did.
Would you have preferred her become an alicorn but not a princess? Because that would have messed up the mythos surrounding alicorns waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than adding one.
Not a Sue, though, despite being awful.
Did you honestly just link a litmus test?
Have you ever actually READ that thing? ANY character that’s interesting enough to write about scores as a Mary Sue, at minimum.
As one who has been part of this fandom since almost the very start, alicorn OCs were highly discouraged because of Luna and Celestia, because they’d be considered “overpowered”. We’ve already seen instances of another alicorn in the show (Cadance), and she seems powerful, though not nearly so much as Luna and Celestia.
I think a lot of this is simply waiting for the next season to see what we learn about alicorns.
That can´t be true cause Celestia was the one who stopped exactly that. So how can something which she kept easily under control be xxxxxxx times stronger than her?
I have yet to see Twi moving the sun on her own to even think that she´s on the sam level as Celestia who got more than 1000 years of experiences under her belt compared to what? 20 years or less of Twily?
Superman? Neo? Luke Skywalker? All apparently Mary Sues.
All the qualities of a Mary sue, but is an actual character.
To put in some perspective, she was already more powerful than Celestia, the ruler and God of their nation, the moment after her first bowel movement. And that’s without power boosters. If that’s not OP, then what is?
No Wings.
She’s the one with the Friendship Canon.
Cannon sue would be a better fit. It’s the mary sue equivalent to official original works.
However even this fails on twilight.

Yeah and if you want to get technical as heck, if Faust really had her way from the start, the show would have been more of an action-adventure, “magical girls” styled show instead of a series where a majority of the episodes are “slice of life” (i.e. it would have been kinda like “Sailor Moon with ponies”). Zecora was even originally envisioned as one of the mentor characters.
Hasbro said “no, we want kids to be able to watch any episode in any order without getting lost in a story arc” and honestly I think this change might have been for the better. (though something like Powerpuff Girls would have been cool, new villain every episode :P)
As for the topic at hand, yeah using the phrase “Mary Sue” is very incorrect. Heck it’s even incorrect to call actual bad characters like Bella Swan a Mary Sue. By it’s very definition, a Mary Sue is supposed to only be a self-insert OC created for fan fiction, not official, original works.
Funny thing is, many people seem to forget two major details about the ORIGINAL Mary Sue archetype from the original Star Trek fanfic. For one, said character and fanfic were actually a PARODY of self-insert fics. Also, the character died at the end of the story. Not many modern Mary Sues seem to follow that last part. XD
we never saw Faust’s original ideas even when she was around. Her ideas were quite different from what we saw, sometimes for the better
Sorry, I meant to say “NOT taking sides of the argument”
THANK YOU
Finally, it gets said.
I guess I am going to take sides on the agruement, what’s done is done. I was concerned about this since the end of S2 when they throw in Shining Armor and Cadence into the mix and honestly, S3 just didn’t match up with the last two seasons. I just wish to see what storylines were set in mind before Faust left and the rules set in this world of Equestria.
Final note: I am not upset that Twilight Sparkle becomes an alicorn, but really, how is becoming an alicorn automatically make Twilight princess worthy?!?
