You do realize it was the channers who even created the fandom? It didn’t start to properly leak from /b/ until the last three episodes of season 1. They spotted and named derpy. Shit it was known as the /b/rony fandom in the beginning because of just that, it was around the time of Luna’s season 2 episodes that finally changed.

Well, personally, I think that it is a bit unfair that whenever the show’s creator says something about the show, their words will be “canon”, let alone their relatives, because it doesn’t cost anything to say a few words while we struggle to make the best content just to be accepted. I believe that the world of equestria is for all of us to shape and complete(under a few principles to make sure that it is recognizable), not just a few staff members.
(but if calling it canon gets your creativity going with new canon material, then I can also roll with you guys, because I just want to have some fun.)

Also, they could just dislike it because it does not look good. It’s reasonable.
