It only kills about 10% of the time, however as I understand it the charge will often alter your body chemistry in a manner that causes greater conductivity.
 
And since lightning likes the path of least resistance once this change has occured it likes you all the more! It might not kill ya right of the bat but it will often mark you so it can find its way back….
