@Background Pony: “make them know their place in life as with any of us peons of society.”

That’s exactly the sort of fatalistic attitude I watch MLP:FiM to get away from.

I’d prefer it if Princesses are born into royalty. It’s more proper, and wouldn’t give little girls the wrong idea, make them know their place in life as with any of us peons of society.

@MonkeyDzyrax

That would’ve been epic. But no. I meant like she defeats Sombra and as a reward becomes a princess.

@Dawn Blast

Which is why I’ve trying to avoid the whole “Twilicorn is bad” mentality. If what McCarthy said was true, there are still two episodes directly tied to MMC, which means they could actually show the change was necessary (or as an extremely unlikely cop-out twist: temporary).

Either way, while I don’t currently see much of a point to it all, I’m sure it’ll all make sense in November.

@Dawn Blast

I get that, but finishing a spell is just about the least princess-worthy thing she’s done on that list. It would’ve made more sense if saving the Crystal Empire was the Season finale, rather than the opener, and she became a princess for that.

Also, while I realize Twilight also stopped Discord, Nightmare Moon, King Sombra, and the Changeling Invasion, her friends played an equally important part in doing so. I just feel she’s getting credit for alot that wasn’t necessarily her doing alone.

“Actually, Starswirl the Bearded is the one who screwed up the spell; Twilight’s screw-up was in not realizing that merely reading the spell would cause it to activate through the Elements. And thanks for realizing that completing the spell was what put her “over the top”, and not the entire reason for the promotion, as many anti-Twilicornites argue. So, all things considered, I have no qualms with Celestia thinking Twilight’s earned it.”

This is my only gripe about MMC, mainly because I don’t feel completing a spell merits princess-hood. Twilight and her friends saved Equestria not once, not twice, but FOUR times prior to MMC, but apparently completing a spell is what does the trick.

Not only that, but Fluttershy managed to reform Discord (the physical embodiment of chaos and disharmony, who nearly destroyed Equestria during their last encounter) almost literally by herself. A feat that neither Twilight, Luna, or even Celestia herself can achieve, yet Fluttershy receives nothing more than a thank you.

Now, I’d be fine with all of this if the writer’s needed Twilight (and only Twilight) to be a princess for some story-arc in the future, but if that’s not the case I can’t help but feel that Twilight’s title isn’t really justified.

But that’s just my opinion..

@The Twelfth Doctor Whoof
Keep in mind this isn’t a lecture on why you shouldn’t oppose Twilicorn, it’s just a quick comment on why those problems don’t bother me (much).

– Actually, Starswirl the Bearded is the one who screwed up the spell; Twilight’s screw-up was in not realizing that merely reading the spell would cause it to activate through the Elements. And thanks for realizing that completing the spell was what put her “over the top”, and not the entire reason for the promotion, as many anti-Twilicornites argue. So, all things considered, I have no qualms with Celestia thinking Twilight’s earned it.

– Based on what we have to go on, it’s mainly Celestia that gets that treatment. Once she got over her rather imposing first impression, Luna had fun with her subjects at the Nightmare Night celebration in Ponyville; and we’ve seen Cadance walking around Canterlot in a flashback without any pomp and circumstance. I’m willing to believe that Twilight can still interact with her friends the same as she always has.

– The fact that we don’t know much about what princesshood entails in Equestria is one reason I think Twilight may be able to play that role. Plus, while it was a small step, her successful efforts to not stress out in “Games Ponies Play” show that she’s getting better in that area. (She also handled herself well in “Magic Duel”, but yes, this is one reason I think it would’ve been better to wait before promoting her.)

– I think Celestia’s been observing Twilight rather than manipulating her, and I don’t think there’s any basis for supposing that she would know that incomplete spell would work through the Elements to screw things up. It’s true that we never saw any evidence that Twilight wanted to be an alicorn princess, but she seems happy with the promotion, and I do think that if she wanted to refuse it, Celestia would have honored her refusal.

– This is probably the biggest complaint I have with the alicornification, but (1) except for Pinkie and maybe Rarity, I don’t think the others would be interested, and (2) I suspect that Twilight is more prepared (not more deserving) due to her many years of being tutored by Celestia.

– I really don’t think that’s going to happen, but having a pretty purple pegacorn princess could mess up the storytelling in other ways. Maybe the show staff will avoid those pitfalls, maybe not; I can just wait and hope for the best.

– Twilight herself has not changed, but her station in life has, which opens up new storytelling possibilities. So, it’s not accurate to say nothing has changed. Again, only time will tell if this is actually handled well.

Yeah, that took a lot longer than I thought; sorry.

Am I the only Derpy fan that, um, kinda sorta doesn’t like that gif? I mean, it’s nicely animated and it’s cute, but having it loop like that really does make her look like either an idiot or “le pandering retard horse”.

@Lime Equine
I do sympathize with that argument somewhat, but (1) of the others, only Pinkie Pie and maybe Rarity would have any interest in such a promotion, and (2) pretty much what Kazapsky said.

Well, once again I’m late to the party. Eh.

Let me say for the record that I agree with nearly everything Andy says. It’s a damn shame that people are being assholes not only to each other, but also to Andy, who has done a fantastic job on the comics and doesn’t deserve the crap this fandom dishes out.

But let me also say I still don’t like Twilicorn. I have my reasons, which I’ve explained before in detail, but I’m always more than happy to reiterate, especially as I’m better able to articulate my thoughts on the matter (thanks to far more erudite commenters than me).

It’s not the wings; I couldn’t care less about that. The “Princess” part I would have been fine with, if the change had come in the very last episode, as I believe it was intended to. Here’s my beef with Twilicorn in a nutshell (not like anyone’ll read it)…

  • I dispute whether Twi actually “earned” that crown. No one doubts that’s she learned her lessons over the course of the series, and she’s defeated a lot of baddies (more on that). But the thing that put her over the top was coming up with a rhyme to fix a thousand-year-old spell that she screwed up in the first place?

  • Throughout the series, we’ve seen that Princesses are practically worshipped (or feared), and everypony basically drops whatever they’re doing whenever one shows up. This must also apply to Twilight now in order to be consistent. In other words, things can’t go on like they did before, and the preexisting relationship dynamic will change. Twilight is no longer an equal among friends; she is demonstrably better than them, and they clearly know it.

  • What is a Princess in this world anyway? Celestia and Cadance have executive authority, and Luna seems to have duties beyond moon-raising as well. Twilight has shown through her thoughts and actions that she is NOT cut out to hold any sort of executive power. Why? Because she’s a scientist, not a politician. She has a history of cracking under pressure and doesn’t have the charisma to lead more than her small group. She would, however, make a fantastic Chancellor (the British version, not the German).

  • Twilight never actually asked to be made a Princess. Celestia forced it on her. She sent a pony known for scientific curiosity an incomplete spell, knowing Twilight would cast it. Then Celly sat back while Twi beat herself up over “her” mistake. Then when she finally managed to fix it, Celestia comes in and declares her a Princess without any consultation. Plus, all of Celestia’s talk about “Destiny” proves that Sun-Butt has been manipulating Twi from the very beginning to suit her own needs; Twilight never had a choice.

  • The other Mane ponies (plus Spike) have been through many of the same trials, and some have actually had more character development. How come they didn’t get ascended? Why only Twilight? She couldn’t have done anything without them, but she’s rewarded while they have to bow down to her?? That’s a bum deal no matter which way you see it.

  • I’m concerned that this will cause the show to turn into a girly version of Dragonball Z, where Twilight becomes a storytelling black hole that sucks in everything to focus on her. Yeah, she’s been the main character from the beginning, but the story was able to move away from her if need be, and there were things she couldn’t do. Now, although she may still have her personality flaws, her Princesshood means that she only needs to speak up and most of the rabble will obey her, instantly fixing conflicts. That’s bad for storytelling. Plus, if your favourite pony isn’t Twilight, then you’re SOL.

  • If, as Meghan has said, nothing changes, then what was the point? I’m talking about from a literary standpoint; we all know the real point was To Sell Toys, just like it’s been since 1982.

    Well, that’s it. I’m tired.
